NEW Experiment - Hatching a Praying Mantis Egg Case!

in nature •  7 years ago

I am very excited to try this experiment!

I picked up a praying mantis egg case today at the Philadelphia Flower Show!

I am going to see if I can get them to hatch, and then I will raise them! This is the first time I am trying this so hopfully it works!

I hung the case from a makeshift branch made from chopsticks and twist-ties.

The enclosure is a deli-cup.

It should take about 4-6 weeks for them to hatch, and I will post an update as things (hopefully) happen!

I will move them once they hatch and get bigger into a larger enclosure.

Stay tuned for more updates!

Thanks @lakeshorebrewery!
Have you ever hatched them? I am trying to figure out the best setup for them to hatch in. I havent really found any good resources on proper humidity levels...especially since i have no idea what species this is.
I wet the paper towel a little at the bottom of the cup.

For now I have them next to my bearded dragon’s tank away from the heat lamps at room temp.

Looks good!
I do not have any experience hatching them, but @customnature does.
Not knowing species is part of the fun!!

Good luck!

Okay cool, i’ll keep you posted.
“Praying” they don’t escape...lol.

Hahahaha!
