SOMEONE CALLED "THE GREEN CRUSADER"

The entire world is talking about global warming, melting of glaciers, landslides, cyclones, nuclear weapons and everything massively destructive. We all know what’s causing it and we are discussing about every possible way to challenge it. We all have opinions and advices for what the government should do and what it policies should include. At a global level we have seminars, conventions and conclaves to dig deeper to into the matter and find out the possible solutions. So basically we create problems by our very own actions and to come up with possible ways of bear with the consequences by “talking it out”, taking the discussions to forums, seminars, conventions and to all the possible private and public platforms. Stop!! Rewind!!

We are “talking “, “discussing”, “advising” and serving the consequences of our actions on a silver platter on all platforms, whenever and wherever possible. But how many of us, individually take the challenge of doing something about it rather than blabbering and blaming the “concerned authorities”.

Jadav Payeng, an environmental activists also popularly known as , the “Green Crusader” took one step which with time turned into a giant leap for humanity. Honoured with Padm Shri, he is known for converting a wasteland into a forest. He planted trees on sandbar of the river Bhramaputra turning into a forest reserve spread across 550 hectares. The forest is called ‘Molai Forest’, named after him.

Jadav was moved by encountering a large number on snakes die due to extreme heat after the floods washed them onto the barren land, and so in the year in 1979 when Jadav had just turned 16; he started planting bamboo plants all across the land. In the due course of time not only did he converted the land into a forest but he also gave a habitat to a variety on animals and birds. The forest now has variety of trees such as valcol, arjun , ejar, goldmohur), koroi, moj, bamboo and himolu.

Molai Forest is home to deer, rabbits, Bengal Tiger, elephants, rhinoceros apes and several varieties of birds and vultures. Jadav converted the entire stretch of sandbar into a dense forest which is now regularly visited by the forest department of India. Molai doesn’t want to stop with that yet, he dreams to convert similar lands into lush green dense forest all across the state. He is truly an inspiration the youth of the nation.
It’s time we rise above all differences and take some actions.
