Giraffe weevil

  • Scientific classification

Kingdom: Animalia, Class: Insecta, Phylum:Arthropoda, Order: Coleoptera, Genus: Trachelophorus, Family: Attelabidae, Common Name: Giraffe weevil or leaf-rolling weevils.

Unlike a giraffe's neck, which helps them reach food in the tops of trees, the weevils only use theirs for nest building and intraspecific combat with other giraffe weevils to win the right to mate with a nearby female.

  • Giraffe weevil Description

The giraffe weevil gets its name from its enormously long neck, much like that of the common giraffe. The necks of the males are typically 2-3 times the length of those of females. They are peaceful insects, showing no aggression towards other species. Even though they look like they could bite, Giraffe weevils cannot bite or sting and, therefore, are not harmful to humans. Most of the body is black with bright red shell covering the wings. The species is capable of flight.

Giraffe weevils one of the longest Attelabidae species. they're known, grow to around (2.5 cm) in length.

where do they live?
Giraffe weevils live in the warm climate of Madagascar, and spending almost their entire lives on a trees, in forests.

What do they eat?
They only eat leaves.

When it comes time to breed, the mother-to-be will roll and secure a leaf of the host plant and lay a single egg inside the tube.
