"Southeast of the Orinoco, in Venezuelan territory, extends a large region, known by the generic name of Guayana, where the turbulent rivers, the hurricane winds, the torrential rains, contrast with the immense stillness of the undulating savannahs and with the majestic and mysterious tepuis, all of which create a set of overwhelming beauty and spontaneity.During the already distant eras of the Conquest and the Colony (XVI century), the amplitude of these territories and their natural riches originated the well-known legend of El Dorado. to adventurers, explorers and colonizers who came to these lands in search of gold, precious stones and other valuable products.

The singular natural and scenic riches and the ecological importance of the Southeast of Guayana, were the main causes that motivated their protection as an invaluable natural heritage for the present and future generations of Venezuelans. From the recognition of these values came the idea, which would later become reality, that a considerable part of this privileged region was declared a National Park. This park, the second largest in the country and one of the most striking of those that make up the National Parks System of Venezuela, was established by Executive Decree No. 770 dated June 12, 1962.
