The sagu palm and the acesiva

in nature •  7 years ago

The Cycadaceae have traditionally been included as gymnosperms. In Venezuela, as a tropical country, gymnosperms are scarce. In the case of Cycadaceae we find the Cycas genera as plants introduced as ornamentals. However, we have native species of the genus Zamia, typical of the shady parts of the forest.

Cycas circinalis, commonly known as sagu palm, although it is not a palm, not even an angiosperm.

They are monoecious plants. Here we observe a male individual with his enormous reproductive structure

Zamia muricata has an underground stem. It is commonly known as acesiva.

And in this case it is a female individual. their reproductive structures resemble the cone of a pine tree.
