Do you know "The Cove"?

It was the documentary film awarded the Academy Award and denounced the village"s longstanding whale and dolphin hunting traditions.
The small village, Taiji city, suddenly became a battlefield for animal-rights activists from around the world. Can they continue the 400-year old tradition? Do they need to stop the tradition?

Their tradition became a global conflict.

The Cove, however, had a problem.
The film never mentioned the historical meaning of the huntings, described the real situation, nor delivered the voice of local people. Without any opportunity of expressing their opinions, the local people faced the storm of public criticism.

日本の捕鯨が世界的に批判されているのをご存知ですか？きっかけは2009年にアカデミー賞を受賞したThe Coveという映画。世界中で上映され、捕鯨を営む和歌山県の小さな漁師村は突然世界からの批判にさらされることになります。
映画ではシーシェパードの活動に焦点が当たっており、地元の人々の伝統や意見については一切触れられていません。ただただ、残忍性を描いているのです。

Megumi Sasaki's Challenge

A few days ago, I met a woman in Manhattan. Her name is Megumi Sasaki, a director and producer known for Herb and Dorothy (2008).

She spent 6 years to create an ”answer film” to The Cove, “A Whale of A Tale”.

Although the film is "The Answer film", it does not provide any clear answer. The film simply describes various opinions toward this controversial issue and allow us to notice how it is difficult but important to understand people on the other side.

Ms. Sasaki herself is not an opponent nor supporter of the tradition. But she tried to question the one-sided describe in The Cove as a documentary film director. I believe this is a brave project. You can easily imagine many activists criticise her and this film.

先日、ニューヨークである女性に出会いました。彼女は著名なドキュメンタリー映画監督の佐々木芽生さん。The Coveの一方的な描き方に疑問を持ち、6年の歳月をかけて和歌山県の捕鯨の様子を撮影、ドキュメンタリー映画「おクジラさま」を製作したのです。

彼女の映画には、明確な答えはありません。

ただ、お互いを理解することの難しさを描いています。

“A Whale of A Tale” Is for This Divided Era

Regardless of your philosophical position on the issue, I strongly recommend you to watch this film. The film teaches us to see the different or even harsh opinion on the different position. We sometimes need to sit on the fence in this divided era.

“A Whale of A Tale” will launch on August 18th at Quad Cinema.
