The former South Side Sportsmen's Club is now part of the Connectquot River State Park since 1973. Multiply buildings have survived, including the main building where the Tavern was, Old Annex, New Annex and Main Garage.
Brief History
The early Native Americans " Secatogue"called the river that ran through the property "Connetquot" meaning Great River.
Englishman, William Nicoll 1, was granted land on both sides of the river in 1684 and 1697 patents. Here he built a dam and grist mill creating a pond known for its trout fishing.
In 1820 the Nicoll family leased some land and the mill to Eliphalet Snedecor. A tavern was opened by Snedscor which then became a stagecoach stop.
The Tavern became a popular place for wealthy sportsmen. A group of these men bought the Tavern and 879 acres and called it "The South Side Sportmen's Club of Long Island"
Over the years more property was acquired amounting to 3,473 acres. They were mainly interested in hunting and fishing protecting the land and building a fish hatchery in 1870.

I took a mile walk up to the fish hatchery and back but will save that for a @lyndsaybowes #walkwithme .
