A Wood Stork

in nature •  7 years ago

Look at this video I got of a Wood Stork at The Celery Fields in Sarasota, Florida. The Wood Stork is a funny looking bird. It's head doesn't have any feathers and gives it an old man sort of look. In this video you can see it's feeding habits. It uses it's feet to stir up the mud to flush the small fish, it then grabs them with it's large bill. These birds are very common around The Celery Fields and are here year round.

They are funny looking, don't you think? They look like old men. When they are juveniles, they do have some feathers on their head and some yellow in their bill.

You can see when they stretch out their wings, they have black on the edges.

Amazing color on that Wood Stork. I wonder if they call them "wood stork" because their head and bill looks like wood.

Another great video @markvance! It looks like it's part turkey or something :)

I like its hunting technique and it seems to be quite efficient. Reminds me a bit of the Killdeer and how it does a similar foot stomping to stir up dinner :) albeit on land.

It is interesting how much black is on the wings, yet very little is seen when the wings are retracted. Thanks for sharing!
