MOPANE WORMS are actually CATERPILLARS????????

in nature •  8 years ago  (edited)

This is so crazy!! Just today as I was scrolling though the web this and came across mopane worms according to research it’s actually caterpillars of the Gonimbrasia belina species.

This very strange yet peculiar worm feeds mainly on the mopane tree I presume that’s where it gets the name from, tough its diet isn’t limited it also eats leaves from other indigenous trees.

These worms are famous for being a snack, yes a snack. These worms are either dried smoked or eaten as is, traditionally the worms would be soaked and then fried. Tins of these creepy crawlers could be found in the rural areas in South Africa.

Even though I have never tried it myself and don’t think I would, the worm is measured to be very nutrition and according to research mopane worms have three times the amount of beef
