The existence of the Ring of Brodgar was first known through the records of a man named Jo Ben who dates from the early 16th century. Although Jo Ben's identity is still unclear, but in his note he writes about the existence of a stone that stands upright like a spear and lined up in a circle. It is said that originally there are 60 stone monuments that stand upright.

Slowly the Ring of Brodgar site began to get noticed in 1906 and began to be revitalized. a number of rocks that have fallen were placed back into the original foundation. In total, there are 27 stone monuments still standing today.
