The top layer is the 'emergent' layer a few isolated trees towering above the rest up to 60m tall. Beneath them 30-50m above the ground is the dense 'canopy' of leaves and branches of big trees. In the gloom beneath is the 'understorey' where small trees and shurbs grow.
