Amazing Kalahari Desert , the Hunter Hunts the Hunters !

in nature •  8 years ago  (edited)

Not only the fascinating animal world of the Kalahari, also the desert bottom itself breathes. And with an amazing intensity, British geoscientists have determined. Depending on the weather, the microbial soil inhabitants absorb a lot of carbon dioxide from the air and release it again.
As is common in cool and warm dry areas of the earth, the soil carries a regular crust of microbes. In the case of the areas under investigation, the soil crust consisted predominantly of cyanobacteria, which can last long periods of dryness in order to awaken to new life under favorable conditions and to operate photosynthesis.

Deserts cover more than a third of the land surface of the earth. This sheer surface makes the desert floor an important factor in the terrestrial carbon budget, which has not been sufficiently considered in climate models. Last but not least, the activity of cyanobacteria also influences soil fertility - and thus the lives of millions of nomadically living cattle. It is therefore all the more important to understand the metabolism of the microbial soil flora and its response to changing environmental conditions.

Big animals are rare in this part of the Kalahari, because of the "Big Five"
there are only lions and leopards. We find traces of beetles, wildcats and jackals. Henri can read it like a newspaper. "Most of the guests want to see animals, we bushmen know without the animals what happened here
at night.
On this land lived our fathers and grandfathers," says Henri, the bushman, who now wears ironed clothes in khaki.
Today, 130,000 bushmen live all over South Africa, Botswana and Namibia. In this area there are 6000.
A few dozen of them work at the lodge.
