The Golden Blowfly

in nature •  7 years ago

For a Blowfly, this one has a pretty fancy name. It's the Golden blowfly. Calliphora hilli. I found it this morning sheltering from the wind among some rocks in the backyard. There is much of interest to write about these flies unless you count the fact this the species was suspected in a case of in accidental human myiasis. That is when blowfly maggots infest the tissue of a living human ...but then, you probably didn't want to know that :-) They are also of interest in forensic entomology where the larvae can be used to establish the time of death of the host. You probably didn't want to know that either. Maybe we should just look at the pretty pictures. Oh yeah... They are not even all that pretty are they :-) Here they are anyway. Just enjoy them for what they are :-)
