Florida Softshell Turtle

in nature •  7 years ago

I see turtles all over the place due to the large numbers of bodies of water in this area and lots of rain. Softshell turtles are a bit more rare to sight on dry land due to their natures of being entirely aquatic. Softshells emerge from the water only to bask in the sun or to lay their eggs.

Many people like to catch and eat them, in some areas they are considered a delicacy. No comment on that..

They prefer the still waters of ponds, streams, lakes, and swamps. All softshells are very fast-moving in water and on land. This particular species is carnivorous and eats small fish, insects, crawfish, and snails. I was excited to snap its photograph!

Thank-you every much🐓

i like turtles , but people shouldnt be eating turtles they have enough problems , poeple going round even killing endangered turtles wtf, there is no mineral vitamin or nutrient that a turtle has that you cant get elsewhere , so people are killing and eating turltes for pleasure alone , sick!

I agree with you🐓

so beautiful turtle! I love turtles, my father has 2 turtles (not like the turtle in your pics) and he loves them so much.

Thanks @silviabeneforti for having a looksie. We love turtles as well, they are interesting creatures. What kind does your father have?🐓

He has a couple of Trachemys from about 25 years ^_^

They recently put a limit on our softshell hunting here. I am glad. They're rare in our rivers. I never understood why it was okay to hunt something we don't have a lot of. Snapping turtles are also eaten here. Blech!

Good, people shouldn't hunt or eat turtles. Lots of idiots after a big rain go out by the sides of the road where it's swampy trying to catch them. I agree with the "blech"🐓

Where we used to live in south Florida there were huge burrowing gopher tortoises living on the vacant lots. They were so cool! Turtles and tortoises are interesting creatures...almost prehistoric looking. I think you were pretty lucky to get such a good picture of that one!

I am lucky to be able to catch so many turtles doing their thing. I see different kinds a lot, we have had so much rain since the summer. Lots of Gophers of here in north FL., we had a burrow on our property, sometimes those things can be 40 feet long. Thanks for coming by🐓

That turtle doesn't realise its now famous. Can't understand why Anyone would want to eat these :(

The plight of the turtle! In every headline. 🐓🐓

Aww you have all the best turtles in your area! We are getting more and more coyotes due to some land close to my property is being developed. Poor creatures :(

I always feel bad for all the creatures that get pushed out due to developments. They have a hard time finding places to go! There has been a surge in land clearing activities the past year, people buying land and building in the rural areas.🐓

Very nice article @mother2chicks :) i agree that not eating turtles is the best as they are fabulous little creatures...i found you on corpsvalues' weekly bulletin, where my Civil War article was also posted, and followed you...please follow me back
