The Gobi desert is the fifth largest desert on earth and is located in Northern china and southern Mongolia. It has extreme temperature fluctuations and animals found in Gobi are found nowhere on Earth. This desert only receives less than four inches of rain every year and there are scattered oases which are source of permanent water. The snow covers the desert from September and the animals prepare themselves for it.
The Gobi desert is stretched over 500,000 square miles out of which sand is only 5% while most of the land consists of bare rock. So this is the ideal locality for grazers who hop between rocks. The winds blow at speed of 140Km/hr and erodes the desert ground.
Most of the Gobi desert’s animals are nocturnal, because in the day time, they are exposed to the predators. The sand is burning hot at daytime and the night is also much cooler. The animals rest during daylight in burrows which they build under the earth. Avoiding the heat is must for their survival in Gobi desert.
Four Eyed Gecko:
These usually hide in burrows until sunset. These are found in the lower elevations of the desert. They come out at night to feed on insects. They have very fragile skin and have fish like scales.
Camel spider:
Although this spider is feared around the world, actually it is harmless to humans. These are arachnids which grow to maximum size of 6 inches and are not venomous. They are carnivores and mostly feed on insects, birds and even small mammals.
Gobi Bear:
It is a rare species of brown bear and is scavenger of the rocky land. There are approximately 50 of these bears remaining in Gobi. The Gobi bear feed on vegetation, insects, lizards and wild rhubarb. This bear occupies the southern part of the desert.
Long-eared jerboa:
These are springy rodents which evolved by jumping to avoid predators. They use their bouncing ability to hunt the prey. They jump into air to catch the flying insects. They also make the chirping sounds to attract the prey.
Snow Leopard:
The snow leopards prefer to sleep on rocky ground and have long legs and wide paws which help them to walk though snow. They are usually found in the highest peaks of the Gobi desert.
Grey Wolf:
It is the largest wild dog found in the desert. It needs up to 6kg of food every day and stores regurgitated chunks for later use. The grey wolf is commonly found throughout Mongolia.
Golden Eagle:
These are most common eagle on Earth and are one of the most adaptable predators in the sky. Their favorite food are jerboas. They dive to ground at almost 400km/hr.
Siberian ibex:
These are the largest members of wild goat family. They live in herds of up to 40. They climb to extremely steep slopes during summer and go back to lower elevations during winter.
Bactrian camel:
This two humped camel is exclusively found in the Gobi desert. These have thick coat which protects them from cold. They have wide feet which help them to walk on rocky ground. Their humps are cushioned with fat.
