The Magic of Mushrooms

It’s definitely mushroom season. We went out today to find as many as we could find and weren’t disappointed.

There are something like ten thousand different mushrooms identified in British Columbia. Every time I go out searching I find something I haven’t seen before.

There are several poisonous ones out there so be careful. There are also some bunk guides out there which give false information so please be wary when hitting the woods. Especially if you plan on eating them. Make sure of your identification 100% before proceeding.

I don’t do much foraging of mushrooms for food, though I’d certainly eat a pine mushroom (white matsutake) if I found one. I’m thinking of heading up north in the next couple of weeks to see if I can.

One can find mushrooms in this climate almost year round. There are so many different varieties that grow in so many different conditions that it’s hard to not find at least one growing while out and about in nature.

There has been a LOT of rain so far this autumn and the cooling temps may mean a bumper pine mushroom harvest this year. Wish me luck!!
