HOW TO ACCURATELY IDENTIFY A WATER MOCCASIN FROM A DISTANCE

in nature •  6 years ago

Hopefully this will help educate some people and keep them safe!

Some time ago, I made a video titled "HOW TO ACCURATELY IDENTIFY A WATER MOCCASIN." It has gotten some good attention on YouTube and has now hit almost 160K views. Here is that video.

One of the complaints about the video is that I pick up the Water Moccasin and how several things that can help you identify this species... if you are holding onto one. It seems that many people would prefer to identify this species from a distance, which is why I made this new video.

In this new video, I attempt to show the water moccasin both in and out of the water. If people get a good looks at this snake and how it behaves, the can familiarize themselves with the species and possibly recognize them in the wild. I used several specimens that we were relocating from a local swimming and fishing hole where people are know to frequently kill them. As we were releasing them to a more remote location, I used my camera and GoPro to shoot this footage.

You can check out the capture footage in the video above. Out of nine Water Moccasins that I saw, I was able to capture eight to relocate. Hopefully it'll prevent them from being killed in the near future.

By combining both footage of them in the water with footage of them on land, it should be a good way to expose others to this species without putting them at risk. Now, from the safety of their own home, people can watch and admire the Water Moccasin without fear of getting bit.

Thanks for useful video....:)...

I hope so!

Gambar yang luar biasa, mantap

From a distance, yes, that is much better.

Many people seemed to think so. Thanks @ocrdu!

Actually, it would be even better to do it from here and keep an ocean between yourself and it.

LOL!

strong winding, with snake, I like snake that are strong and funny, @papa-pepper,☺️

Thank you @jhoni!

Thanks for the educational video. I always feel if you leave me alone I will leave you only when it comes to snakes.

You're welcome!

So, what you are saying is that the snakes i have found drowned in the pool are not water moccasins?

Not sure... who drowned them?

I am unsure. I didn't notice, wasn't watching.
And then i came to clean the pool, and there is a garter snake all drowned.
Maybe it was Mother Nature. I hear she can be quite the bitch.

Or maybe there is a bully snake pushing snakes into the pool.

Most snakes that I know, including Garter Snakes, are pretty good swimmers. I'm surprised you found one drowned, unless it got exhausted and then sunk...

I am unsure if it got exhausted or had something to do with the chlorine.
But, it indeed drowned. Which was very sad.

I was thinking about that too. Don't worry, there's more where that came from.

Love this video! The shots are epic! I am still amazed at how close you get to them. I wrote about that in my youtube comment. I still don't think I would be that brave though. I need to get my brother watching your channel. He loves snakes and stuff. hahaha

Yeah, I guess I get closer than some would.... Those rattlesnakes out there by you do sound fun!

oh my you probably would have fun with them. haha if you come to AZ bring your tongs! lol although you might want longer ones. hahaha

I'll let you know if I head that way! Do you have any longer tongs?

Any longer tongs?

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.

hahaha mine are all about that same length. hahaha

howdy this fine Monday @papa-pepper! this is such a great educational video, thank you. I didn't know that water snakes could mimic water moccasins. I wonder if Texas has laws against killing snakes? thank you sir!
nice hat.

Thanks man! The mimicking is very convincing to watch.

it's a rather amazing ability but the poor water snakes have no idea the danger they put themselves in when it comes to people anyway who might kill a moc but not a water snake.

Yeah, that's a good point. Just being a snake is bad enough, but pretending to be venomous! Oh no, look out!

exactly sir because there ain't a whole lot of papa-peppers running around out there, most of us are scared witless of those things. but I think your videos help people to see that they are just animals that can be treated with respect.

I hope so. I definitely respect them, and I think even watching me shove a camera (in my hand) next to their heads without any horrible results may change how much people irrationally fear them. (Not that I encourage ANYONE to try what I do.)

lol! yes sir, well I don't think you have to worry about too many of us trying to do what you do! maybe Rainbow Man!

Great piece of article and the video is very helpful thank you for sharing this.

Glad to hear that you enjoyed it! It took a long time to shoot and edit, but hopefully it'll help some people.

Thanks for sharing this information!

You are welcome! Thanks for checking it out!

Very timely as we are going kayaking Friday...you are crazy! I mean that in a kind way 😂

Be safe out there, and enjoy yourselves and each other!

That looks like a dangerous snake and it can swim! ...... It has a beautiful skin tho

It is venomous, and can swim very well.

I love it, "OK... where did it just go, I'm going to back up a little bit... "
You really need to find someone to go with you on some of these adventures, to at least hold the camera.

You really need to find someone to go with you on some of these adventures, to at least hold the camera.

Is that an offer?

If I lived closer, I would. I was looking for some while working on my prepper cookoff challenge, all I found was a little garter snake.

I'll go!

If things weren't so hectic in my life right now. If I had a car things would be much easier and I could probably afford to get away.

That would be a fun show....
I can see it now.
papa-pepper: where did it go?
hippie-witha-gun: uh... I think it's crawling up my pants leg...

In due time! First things first, then crazy guys in the woods with venomous snakes!

Yeah ive seen these guys in two surprisingly different geographic locations. First instance was along the mississippi during the flood in early 90s. Second time, was a small lake approx 60 SSW from Omaha NE.. i ended up identifying it by a book with DNR. the small lake was a popular swimming area, while the snakes generally keep to themselves unless your an a-hole to them. DNR ended up draining the lake and moving them to a safer location for humans and themselves. DNR ended up finding that someone had them as pets, and just turned them loose...

Wow! Not exactly the best pet to turn loose, are they?

I just wonder how they survived the brutal winters.

I found this VERY informative. Can't miss that big mouth! That was the key for me. That behavior is distinct. I also noticed, they would much rather display and get you to leave and/or retreat rather than strike out and bite. Good to know they are not very aggressive and would rather give you plenty of opportunity to peacefully leave. Thanks so much!

Yeah, mostly they try to "run away" or scare you off. They aren't really the aggressive attackers that some people make them out to be.

Thanks again for the education. I learn more here than I ever did in school.

Awesome videography @papa-pepper! Fast swimmer and dangerous. BTW didn't your mother ever tell you not to poke wild animals, especially venomous snakes?

My mother did say something.... But I think it was "You ARE somebody..." So now, when I hear "somebody's got to do it," I know that's my cue!

wink!

🤣

Such awesome footage of your good self and these beautiful snakes! They are so lucky to have you on their side @papa-pepper! Snakes must be one of the most mis represented and mis understood creatures on this planet. You have a raw and mystical quality that enthralls me and them☺️❤️🦋🌴💛🌈

Lol - Thanks for the compliment, and glad to hear that you liked the video!
