KEEP IT OR KICK IT? - SNAKES ON THE HOMESTEAD

in nature •  5 years ago  (edited)

What would you do?

Have you ever wondered if there are some snakes that you should allow to be on your property? You know, those tiny, nonthreatening, slug-eating little ones? In this video, the Little-Peppers and I discuss some pros and cons of seven different species of snakes and decide who to KEEP on the homestead and who to KICK off of our land.

Individual preferences will always vary, but we have our reasons for the snakes that we allow to live on our land. In this video we cover the Ringneck Snake, Redbelly Snake, Brown Snake (aka De Kay's Snake), Copperhead, Northern Water Snake, Garter Snake, and the Black Rat Snake. Enjoy!

Rattlesnakes are big ????

They are the big snakes out in these parts, and we need the big snakes to eat all the big varmints they can.

The trouble is, these snakes are really ass-holes. They can decide an area is theirs (including your house) and they don't negotiate.

So, i spray them with a water hose or move them with my snake catching stick.

(the baby one in the bathtub drain was a pain!) Well, i didn't get bit, but i wish i had thought of using one of those scissor like snake catchers you introduced us to. I used chopsticks)

Gotta love snakes, even the dangerous ones. Although, I would have to say with Charlie around I wouldn't keep them all like I would have been inclined to do before him.

If it's edible..Eats it.

Good work. Informative and interesting!

Yes! The thing that had me loving this video is each snake's theme music.
Truly epic.
and ...I learned about numerous snakes!

The Black Rat Snake is a tough call. The cons out weigh the pros sadly. They are real good snakes. I'd keep one around just to have as a pet.

I want to chime in and say that the Indigo Snake is actually the largest snake in north America. They can get 9 to sometimes 10 feet long. I've actually been fortunate enough to catch a few of these in Florida when I was like 10 to 12 years old. They are almost extinct snakes so that's why I say I was lucky to have found some of these growing up. They only inhabit Florida and maybe some parts of southern Georgia. Sadly I lost all my old pictures I had of me with these gentle giants. I think the biggest one I ever found was 7 feet long. They are gentle giants and won't even strike at you.

Been away from Steemit for quite a while, but I'm glad to see you're still around. I love the way you're raising your kids to be good stewards of all the wildlife on your property, God's creatures all of them.

Hello my friend! :D

Those were all cool snakes to look at, but that Northern Water Snake was the coolest looking one, just because I liked that you showed it breathing, which I thought was very neat. :D

I'm so glad you relocate the ones you don't want/need on your property. :D I love that you teach all your children, regardless of their age, the ones that are safe and the ones they need to stay away from. :D Your kids are very lucky to have you as their dad. :D

God bless you and your wonderful family. :D Have an awesome day my fabulous friend! :D
