PICKING WEEDS FOR MOTHER'S DAY

in nature •  6 years ago

Not even flowering weeds.

I'd say that @mama-pepper is a blossoming herbalist. She's got an appetite for knowledge and she likes to live a simple, healthy, natural life. Each day we try to learn and apply, and as situations arise, we make the most of our opportunities. Today, some of the @little-peppers and I harvested a Mother's Day present for her.

THE GIFT OF "WEEDS!"

This was no ordinary weed, this was Mullein. We first learned of this incredible plant from a midwife years ago, and have been using it ever since. It has many potential uses, but we like to focus on the decongestant capabilities. Each summer we now try to collect some to have dried Mullein leaves on hand for the winter, or any other time that we may need some.

The @little-peppers actually have years' worth of experience at this now, so they got right to work. We not only like them to be able to understand the benefits of certain plants, but how to safely harvest them as well. With these we never take all the leaves, but instead harvest some select leaves off each plant, leaving plenty of leaves to keep each plant healthy and living.

If you notice the one that Monster Truck is working on, you can see a good leaf selection. Not only is it a free gift for @mama-pepper, but the @little-peppers got the opportunity to do the work of collecting it themselves. We'll still clean and dry them together, but the majority of the work collecting them was all the @little-peppers!

When delivered, we found out that these were truly a perfect gift for that special mom in our lives. Yup, a true herbalist! Wild plants excite her! Not only will this harvest always be remembered as the "Mother's Day batch" that the @little-peppers harvested, it's one more summer task that we've already begun! We did have a lot of fun collecting the leaves too, and I had a great time photographing my children. Here are a couple photos of each child.

I totally love how you are celebrating mother's day. Instead of buying useless gifts, a good walk in the garden picking up weeds and teaching the children about various herbs, not only does your wallet good but the environment as well. Kudos and cheers!

Instead of buying useless gifts

Very good point!

Wow that's so cool. Definitely is an awesome present!!

She sure thinks so! Glad to hear that you agree.

Beautiful photos <3 I love Mullein, we had a lot of smoking and teas blends with it!

Yeah, you are not alone. We just use it in tea ourselves, but lots of folks do use it in smoking blends too.

I love this! What a wonderful gift for @mama-pepper!
I spent part of my day today with my husband and littles visiting a dear friend on her off-grid soon to be homestead. We went on a hike searching out herbs and edible plants. I just posted about it an hour ago or so :)

Good work little peppers! ❤

@corrielaine

Very cool! Wild edibles and herbs are always a blessing!

And TP is getting so dang outrageous!

  • I read awhile back that the seeds could be ground up in a blender and used to catch fish. Evidently it paralyses them and they float to the surface.
    • This probably would be illegal, so save this tidbit of info to be used only if the SHTF...

A quick search find this Outdoor Life article

Good point on the TP, and I've heard of some of those fishing methods....

I am very proud of you, with me seeing them rejoice like this and a good cooperation to make a mother happy, it is a very noble work done by the children.
you educate them affectionately and they will serve their parents.
always happy friends.

Happy Mother's Day to @mama-pepper. You and your child really make something very special for @mama-pepper. I can imagine how happy he is. Children seem to be very happy picking weeds that are very useful for herbal foods. I've also seen your post 2 years ago. Always follow interesting posts about life from @papa-pepper. Good luck always for you my friend.

Love to go to fields and enjoy the nature.

ohhh, that kind of weeds you talked about, I thought the different weeds :D

Nope, not weed, or flowering weeds, just a useful herb commonly called a "weed." Sorry for the misunderstanding.

You are the perfect eg of "Parenting done right" ☺

I'm so in love with this @papa-pepper...

It's unique and something different from the norm of getting roses...
It's also pocket friendly...

Your creativity still awes me...
Well done and happy mothers day to mama-pepper

what a nice child you have!

Good photos! What are they picking? It looks like some vegetable.

"M" is for the million things she gave me,
"O" means only that she's growing old,
"T" is for the tears she shed to save me,
"H" is for her heart of purest gold,
"E" is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
"R" means right, and right she'll always be.

Looks like you guys had a great Mother's day! Peppers pickin'!

I must say the title confused me hahahah.
Mama and little peppers are a joy to see as they spend quality family time. :)

My children and husband also give me plants for the holidays. They know that these will be the best gifts for me!

I love this field Trip! I like how the @little-peppers are learning from a young age the different types of herbs in the wild, or weeds as some folks call them. It's their loss...
