A bold, opportunistic bird of prey, the southern crested caracara (Caracara plancus) is often seen walking around on the ground looking for food. It mainly feeds on carcasses of dead animals, but will steal food from turkey vultures, raid bird nests, and take live prey if the possibility arises.
~30% larger than their closest relatives (the northern-crested caracara), southern crested caracara are the second-most massive species of falcon in the world (runner up to the gyrfalcon). Juveniles can be distinguished by their pink beaks and more highly-pitched call.
The southern crested caracara thrives in open and semi-open lands, from Tierra del Fuego (in southernmost South America) all the way north to southern Peru and the Amazon river region.
