Native bees found my sunflowers

in nature •  7 years ago

The kids & I planted some sunflower seeds a few months ago. I make an effort to teach them about life cycles, and where food comes from, even if my gardening efforts are rather sporadic.

These sunflowers are so majestic, and beautiful. From such a small seed comes a might & powerful plant, with a massive head of seeds with fat & protein to sustain further life.

Whilst appreciating their majesty one day I noticed some black insects on the flower head. On closer inspection I realised these were native bees!

I was pretty excited as I had never seen any natives bees around our property before. Native bees in Australia are stingless, and also live on their own instead of a hive. They play an important role in pollenation of native species. Now that I know we have some nearby, I will look at making some more habitat for them.
