As we continue to drive species towards extinction through our indiscriminate activities, so too the natural habitats are been destroyed day in and out. Wetlands continue to be a drastic decline in World especially in developing countries for development purposes.
In the North West region of Cameroon for example, this has been to some extent exaggerated as these natural sites do serve the store house for excess water during periods of heavy down pour in the rainy season.
This neighbor of mile Five, NKWEN Bamenda (North West Region of Cameroon) where I lived some twelve years ago, attending University. This are was full of Raphia palms which did served as a source of livelihoods to some people and above all natural habitat to some animal species as well as store house for water and as seen on the picture the uncompleted building was not there at the time I was living in this neighborhood. The are was entirely a Raphia palm bush that has been completely reclaimed today.
The question now is why are so addicted to constructing houses on such areas after being reclaimed? We should need also should endeavor to avoid such risky areas because when disaster such as floods, collapse of such structures, we will tend to spend more or even risked being killed in that event.
The government agencies and local communities on their part need to restrict developmental projects to take place in such areas no matter the justification because it will make her to spend carelessly in any event of disaster, funds that would have been used for other projects will thus be diverted to this. We should make an effort to learn from mistakes of others, and thus safe guard our wetlands from being reclaimed and the evidence of Raphia palm storms are still very visible on the site. However during the rainy season the said place is still flooded with water, I suppose that is the reason why the project has not been completed but we can avoid all of this.
There is no way that these areas will be better construction or project sites than areas that have not been reclaimed, as such we need to stand firm against land reclamation. The government on her part should stop the issuing building permits on these areas by first after receiving application should visit the site for inspection so they should be sure.
Environmental usage should be done in a sustainable manner such that those coming after us will have the same opportunities as we do now. As earlier written concerning this, the education has to continue and I know that through the Steemit platform, all of these will be improved upon through our collective support and action.
