Nature: Ice Crystal Sunset from Canada in January

in nature •  7 years ago  (edited)

You may hear me bemoaning the fact that we are having an exceptional cold winter in the part of Canada where @knarly327 and I live.

Today, the outside temperature is -24 degrees Celsius or -12 degrees Fahrenheit.

Then, you must add something called wind-chill.

The Wind Chill Factor

The wind chill factor is applied when we get these extremely low (sub-zero) temperatures. It's a measurement of what the wind would feel like against exposed skin or how your human body would feel if it wasn't properly protected from the affects of being in exceptionally cold wind.

Wind increases the rate at which the body loses heat. This means that on windy days in the winter, the outside temperature will feel colder than what the temperature actually reads on a thermometer.

Today, the wind chill drops us down another 6 degrees. With the wind today, it feels like it's -30 degrees Celsius outside right now.

As a result there is an extreme cold warning issued by Environment Canada because the threat of frost bite and hypothermia is a real thing. People can die from hypothermia and frost bite can lead to amputation of body parts (like fingers and toes) depending on how severely the digits become frozen.

Being aware of the wind chill factor is critical for Canadians who work outside and for our homeless.

Yes, we have homeless people who mostly reside in all our major cities.

We have teams of trained people who check on all the folks who refuse to take shelter inside. The teams of helpers (many of which are volunteers) offer additional sleeping bags, warm clothing, hot food and hot beverages, as well as basic first aid.

They (our homeless) will also be offered refuge to warm-up in a warm vehicle and they will be offered transportation to a shelter if they change their mind and want to get inside, out of the elements.

Some will accept the help. Sadly, others will not.

The picture that I am sharing with you today is a "sunset". What's unusually about it is the that the sun is illuminating the ice crystals (which are in the air) as it sets.

It's beautiful to see it but it comes with a warning that says it's exceptionally cold outside.

We must heed the warning and take appropriate measures to keep warm and protect ourselves from the outside elements, if we go outside.

I welcome your comments and I invite you to follow me on my journey...not to worry I'm a trained Canadian and we know how to survive in the winter. ;)

Girl, I'm so ready for summer time it's not even funny! We're having a bitter winter ourselves here and I know it's taking it's toll on Danny, whether he wants to admit it or not, I know it is. He's always been a tough man but all of those years trying to be superman are catching up with him slowly but surely. I don't mind that he's slowing down and love him the same, I'm actually glad that he is.
He has shown me pictures of your place which looks amazing! He says that he wants to move up there with you guys but Canada has to change some of their gun and defense laws first lol, only Danny! I really like this picture of the sunset, you did good! Try to stay warm!

Thank you @carolina-girl! I hear you on the warm summer sun thing...in fact @knarly327 and I cracked the other day. We booked a trip for the middle of Feb. (for a week) so that we could get some real Vit. D.
I so want you two to come for a visit in the summer or fall...I think it would be so much fun.
(See my reply to @bluelightbandit on my tall toilet. ) Still makes me LOL for real. ;D

Danny told me about your trip, that sounds so exciting! I'm all for going back to Canada, I really enjoyed it there! And I would love to meet you guys, that you would be a blast!
This whole toilet story is just too much, girl! Danny says he keeps having visions lol!

Ugggh....Speaking of wind chill. We had a wind chill of -15 degrees the other night and I was not happy. We're in an abnormal deep freeze in my area but it's almost over with. We've had a couple of weeks of sub-zero temperatures and that's just not normal for this area for this time of year. A couple of people have already died due to the Arctic air. But guess what? It will be around 60 degrees on Tuesday lol, welcome to North Carolina! We have the craziest weather of any other place I can think of.

I have an Uncle that lives in Florida near @Francisk that I thought about moving to. I really enjoy the weather in Florida, I had a blast on my motorcycle the last time I was there. If I ever get back to where I can work again, I need to see if my certifications can lateral down there, I'm pretty sure they can. Although, times have changed so much over just the past few years, I don't think my stern and zero tolerance for bullshit would be welcomed very much. I also thought about working up North in New York, they start their officers out very well up there. Florida would be less money but I think the weather would make up for it. I dunno, just got the sudden urge to up and move somewhere for some reason....Ha!

PS. Thanks now for the forever burned image of you struggling to keep your balance on that tall throne after partaking in a toke or two of some premium Kush and then laughing in a demonic tone! The buffalo thing you took a picture of was just a bonus. @carolina-girl and I both laughed tremendously while reading that!

Oh please move to a state that's legal, if you are going to move...
Let me reassure you there is no laughing at 4 am when you're trying like hell not to fall off because your balance has gone to another dimension. The toilet is too damn tall and I received no help from my better half, as he chose not to acknowledge my plight and sided with the engineering of a superior flush.
The damn toilet is like a ride at an amusement park. Should come with a minimum height requirement. Don't get on this thing if you are under 5'7" or you risk losing your front teeth. Hahaha! I did "sort of" feel sorry for the sales lady who got caught in the cross fire of a heated discussion and my sister's food truck lunch was the icing on the cake. How do you serve that and make it look appealing? Oh you just put it on checkered paper and no one will notice...LMFAO!

Listen @rebeccaryan, you know that I respect you and all but I think I'm going to have to side with @knarly327 on this one. I mean a good power flusher can be hard to find. So in this case, I think horsepower trumps comfort! ROFLMFAO!

Rebecca
It may be cold outside. But I know that inside you have a warm heart.
The author of this post demands more attention than the post itself.
You my/our "Steemit Queen" never fail. Just when we are beginning to despair. There you are. Filling us with knowledge and sights of where you are and what you are doing.
Could I be so careless as to not take a special note of your efforts for us and for Steemit? I think not.
Thank you for your tireless efforts. Because of what you have already accomplished on Steemit. And for what you will do in our future.
I take a bow and softly say, "I knew you would. Thank you."

Francis

Hi Francis!
It has been the strangest winter yet! We've basically gone from subzero temperatures to 0 degrees overnight and rain is in the forecast.
We had a really wet snowfall which prompted the purchase of a new snowblower (yesterday) because wet snow is really heavy on the end of a shovel and it's a heart-attack waiting to happen...
Such is life. :)

I understand on the snow shovel heart attack. One of the problems is sucking that cold air into your lungs as you start breathing harder. Ugh on all that.

I like it here. Katie should be here in about 12 days. She is like you. She is young. She is 20.
"oops. Maybe that makes her feel like an old woman. Ha ha" I shouldn't say that. lol
So she should know everything technology. I am counting on that.

"She has an iphone 8 if that means anything? Does that mean anything?"
If she doesn't. We will have to learn together. She has to get on Steemit.
Household ground rules. Ha ha

If she knew what was in store for her. She might say. As kids do.
"I'm good." It is OK. Suddenly the cold weather doesn't seem so bad. Ha
Just kidding.

Francis

Yes, I know firsthand how this frost and icy wind. At one time I froze my hands. In such weather it is desirable to stay at home. Thanks for the cognitive post.

This is a great example of how one must bundle up and have the least amount of skin exposed when ice crystals are literally hanging in the air. Frost bite is awful. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Thanks for sharing your story and this photo @magnata!

beautiful sunset picture, canada now temperature is very low and i can't imagine right there, belive me if i there, cold, snazing, frostbite, phenuemia, and finally i am gona die.. hahaha. really you people are very strong and strength!

Right in Canada's national anthem @sheikh27..."True North, Strong and Free".
The strong and free, partial comes from learning how to survive here and free because no one in their right mind would want to live here so why would any other country want to take over? LOL!
Mostly, we are all just CRAZY.

@rebeccaryan,
This is an amazing photography! I assure in my country sky, I have never seen this before! And snow, yeah no idea how it feels either! (Actually I love it) So, can't say much more but -24C means crazy! I assure I will be frozen with or without jackets in that cold!

Cheers~

Yep, I live in Canada too and I know how the cold feels like XD The snow looks beautiful in pictures, but in real life, I'm cursing at the cold temperature and the snow going inside my boots.

The photograph you shared is truly beautiful! In what area exactly do you live? Because the sunsets here in Quebec don't look nearly as amazing as the one you shared.

I'm in Ontario @inspirationalrag! Great to meet another Canadian.
I think it was just a really odd night with the weather. It looked exceptionally red in real life and it seemed like a column was projecting from the top of the sun as it set. I think it was ice crystals in the air that caused the intensity of colour. :)

Great sunset...can cause extreme cold skin cancer :(
this photo was taken 1 hour ago ;)

Gorgeous @mrsfox! What's the location?

London dear @rebeccaryan

UK or Canada?

Uk :)

Oy vey, THAT's cold!!! wow....it must limit even basic activities. I would be complaining too. But yes that's such a beautiful sunset.

It's been the strangest winter @natureofbeing! We've gone from -20s with wind-chill that's put us into -30s but the last 2 days have been 0. We are having a January thaw and we've now completely lost our ice rink.
Crazy!

It has been a really cold winter so far where I live... but today is like Spring weather for some reason! and soon we'll drop back to the negatives...

We are having the same type of forecast. In fact it is raining heavily right now and it's suppose to get really cold again in the next 2 days or so.

Wind chill is literally one of the worst things ever. Living by Lake Michigan makes it almost unbearable at times like this. I complain about my weather too much on here XD, it is always refreshing seeing other people deal with the same awfulness that I do...even though I wish we were all warm.

On a more serious note, the thought of homeless people in this weather just always makes me really sad...its great to give them some help and transportation to shelters where they can at least be warm.

That's a crazy sunset! So it looks like that because of all the ice in air?

Hi @owenwat!
Yes, it looked like there was a column or tower jetting up from the top of the sun as it set.

Wonderful sunset capture, Bu not wonderful to the Canadians, they've suffer from low temperature. I never heard before these condition.

Well, it's part of everyday life for us right now. It means, we do extra things like plug in block heaters so that we can even start our vehicles and leave extra time for them to warm up properly before we try to drive anywhere. If we go outside, we layer and choose all of our clothing very wisely for the length of time we are planning to be outside. We still go outside but we plan for it.

What a wonderful sunset view with the whiteness of the Telegraph gave a beautiful painting
Surely you should be careful and reduce frost and cold,
Displaced people suffer a lot in the winter from extreme cold.
When we hear in Canada we say there are no homeless people, all the conditions are appropriate and live in luxury.
Thank you for this publication

Today I wrote an article about what women are subjected to sexual harassment during their work. You can give me your head in

@rebeccaryan, How about you in this winter season? More peoples suffering from low temperate weather condition. Especially homeless persons. How many peoples died per year from hypothermia? I have no idea coz I never faced winter conditions yet. Probably in future I will take experience and lot suffer that day to me.
I seriously think you all be safe now. Peoples have lot troubles to walk every streets. Snow balls has everywhere. But snow fallen pics really fantastic to view. Same feel your sunset pic.

Fabulous sunset capture @rebeccaryan. Every year faced this situation. So I think you can face it easily. Thanks for updating.

Thank you! This is true @dragonking. You are corrected.

Whoa, that's cold! Stay inside and keep yourself warm with tea and soup. That's what I would do anyway.

That's a beautiful sunset. It doesn't get nearly as cold over here by the coast, just endless clouds and rain...
