Lots of caterpillars are active in these cold autumn nights

Besides some spiders, snails and a few other arthropods I saw quite a lot of caterpillars yesterday night. At the beginning I was astonished and wondering why there are so many active caterpillars. Then it came to my mind that they are obviously out for there last meals before the first frost is coming and they start to overwinter, either as a caterpillar or as a pupa. Butterflies use both of these overwinter strategies, as well as overwintering in their adult state, as an egg or moving into southern regions.
Neben ein paar Spinnen, Schnecken und wenigen anderen Gliederfüßern sah ich gestern Nacht einige Raupen. Zu Beginn war ich sehr erstaunt und verwundert wieso so viele Raupen aktiv sind. Dann ist es mir in den Sinn gekommen, dass sie offensichtlich unterwegs für ihre letzen Mahlzeiten vor dem ersten Frost sind, bevor sie entweder als Raupen oder Puppe zu überwintern beginnen. Schmetterlinge nutzen beide dieser Strategien, ebenso wie das überwintern in der Adultform, als Ei oder ein weiterziehen in südlichere Regionen.
