Dramatic history of Pompeii in Italy

Hi Steemit Friends, in this post, I present you the dramatic and unfortunate history of the Pompeii city in Italy:





Pompeii, city in the southeast of Italy, a few kilometers away from Naples, in the volcanic plain of Campania, all rich Romain possesses their villa there. On this day of autumn of the year 79, the paved streets teem with world. The women buy their bread at Modestus, the baker. In the temple of Isis, the priests get ready to take their meal. Some beautiful houses are under repair, following a recent earthquake. Over the plain the somber silhouette of Vesuvius is outlined on the sky with its plume of smoke which escapes for several days.





Then suddenly, the volcano mutters and its crater vomits ardent stones and floods of incandescent lava. A big black cloud rises and hides the sun and the night comes down on Pompeii. Soon, a shower of ardent ash begin to fall.





But the violence of the eruption is such as people are struck before having been able to run away. Some won the sea and try to embark but a tidal wave submerges them. Others are suffocated by deadly gas. Two thousand people die this day.





In the terrible rumbling of Vesuvius in eruption get involved the shouts of terror of the inhabitants. Some lock themselves into their houses in the hope that the thickness of walls will protect them from some ash and from gases. But in vain! During two days, the eruption rages; when she stops finally, a layer of ash of 6 meters of thickness recovers Pompeii. The forum, the baths, the luxurious villas: everything disappeared !





Under the weight of fragments of all kinds, walls and roofs collapse. Some survivors will return to find their disappeared goods there. Waste of time !





Later, the Roman Emperor Titus asks a commission to see if it is possible to reconstruct Pompeii, also destroyed Herculanum and Sabies. But the ash had hardened, wrapping everything in a merciless mold. We gave up it.





The name of Pompeii is going to disappear, buried under the ash. The city will fall into oblivion.

It stays track of Pompeii only in some Latin works. In the XVIth century, an architect makes accentuate a tunnel to bring the water of Sarno and rediscover ruins. But it is necessary to wait for the XVIIIth so that the searches begin. Regrettably! These shoot fast in the treasure hunt and we care little about caused damage: objects of a great beauty are destroyed or lost. Moreover the layer of ash and lava which recovers the dead city became hard as some stone and the investigations turn out to be difficult.





But today, after years of a patient and meticulous work, a big part of the antique city was updated. And with her, of magnificent relics of past: paintings, statues of gods or emperor, jewels, tools of architects or simple kitchen utensils. We find even human bodies petrified in the attitude where the rain of ashes seized them. All these vestiges allowed to reconstitute in a surprising way the life in Pompeii as it was struck by the cataclysm. We even found, sealed in ashes cooled by Vesuvius, bread of Modestus, the baker !
