Colorado River and Lake Mojave at Dusk

Alpenglow light spreads across the rippled desert of Black Canyon and the Colorado River. Taken late in the afternoon at dusk, the streaks of light cross through the mountains in the west casting long shadow fingers across the wide Mojave Desert range.

These lands are harsh and difficult but stark as they may seem they are a wonderful tapestry of color and texture and beautiful reminders of the diversity of shapes, colors and creativity of our wondrous planet.

The Colorado River has cut and shaped Black Canyon over the course of millions of years. Though it looks barren this land is full of vibrant life. For a larger view go here

In this second image taken a few minutes later you can see how the alpenglow light has become more intense as it cuts across the canyon floor. Shadows become more pronounced and longer as time rapidly closes the window on another beautiful day.
