McCloud River, Middle Falls, framed by two redwoods.

We camped this weekend at Fowler Campground in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest near McCloud, California. The McCloud River runs along side the campground and there are miles of trail along the river. There are three magnificent sets of falls on the McCloud River.

Upper Falls. These falls are the set farthest up the river.

Middle Falls from above the falls. The Middle Falls are the widest of the three.

Here are the Middle Falls taken from the stream below the falls.

The Lower Falls. The Lower Falls mark the furthest point that the salmon original travelled up the McCloud River from the sea. Unfortunately, now Lake Shasta prevents salmon from entering the McCloud river.

However, the McCloud river is one of the finest trout rivers in the country. Here is a large Rainbow trout my son somehow photographed. He simply saw this fish while wading through the pools below the Lower Falls. Amazing.

The McCloud River is special for trout as large Rainbow range from Lake Shasta to the Lower Falls and smaller native Redband trout can be found above the Upper Falls. The McCloud Rainbow trout is "the most celebrated trout on the planet" and has been stocked all around the world - supposedly every continent. Countries mentioned include Chile, Argentina, New Zealand, Australia, and England. (source - History of the McCloud River Rainbow Trout, Jack Trout, 2016)

The photo of that bow is incredible. What a catch(photobomb)...

yeah haha photobomb obviously I didn't think of that one.

Love the waterfalls. Your son took a great photo of the fish.

Yes to get a picture of a fish like that without catching it is most unusual.

Wow! Thanks for the interesting story. I enjoyed your trip. These waterfalls and coniferous forest look very attractive for recreation. There is certainly very good air and be in the coniferous forest is very useful . Sorry for such a late response,@steven-patrick, after my journey I still find it somewhat difficult to gather my thoughts here :)

yes nothing better than a walk in the quiet forest on a cool morning.

Beautiful and amazing nature!
Did you eat the trout! Camping, camp fire, and roasted fish = wonderful life :-)

Yes I love fresh trout but alas we did not catch this guy. He was just hanging at the back of a pool. I have never seen anything like it. And I fished a lot growing up.

Awesome picks. sounds like your son made you jealous of the rainbow shot... I would be too, it's a good shot and would not be common to see. I'm still trying to figure how...

Thanks. Yeah my theory is maybe that Rainbow had been caught and released by an angler upstream. He was still kind of out of it. He is backed up to a rock and against the vegetation on the shore. When my son decided to try and catch him bare handed, he perked up and swam deeper into the pool.

It's possible, I would say that would take the fight out of them, but they are usually very aware of approaching danger. Of course, I did have a friend when we were kids, who would wade in the creek and actually catch them barehanded. I also saw a snake catch one, that was pretty wild.

They are beautiful fish and it was a great shot.

Really good pictures of the beautiful river. Seems like a great area for camping and hikes.

Thanks. Very different than your hiking pictures. But I believe nature is always beautiful and in many different ways

Yes indeed, I think every place has it own charm and thats exiting. It is fun to see great places from around the world. :-)

are you traveling a lot? what's the perfect travel destination for you?

Nature is good. This was a good trip. Fun to see different places. Mix in some good food options and thats pretty good. Visited Whistler a few times. Thats a great destination.

Wow...such beauty! That is a big trout- not something you get a photo of everyday!

that trout is a beauty for sure :)

What a beautiful spot @steven-patrick! It reminds me of so many areas back in British Columbia. It has been so hot here that the "coolness" in your photos looks inviting to me :) Lucky shot of the trout too; nice job 'son' :)

Yes the mountains of British Columbia are beautiful. You will enjoy the heat in a few months when winter comes up north :)

Yes, I'm sure I will @steven-patrick! When my sons start complaining of the rain there haha
