Cottonwood Seed

The cottonwood is also known as the poplar.
It is a tall tree with a spreading crown, named for its cotton-like seeds.

Plenty of people sneeze a lot due to these cottonwood seeds falling out of the trees in the spring.
The local saying is, "The Cottonwood is Flying!"
They make me sneeze; but not too bad!

This tree is in the front yard of a home near my house and is about 75 ft tall and 40 or more years old!

Isn't the bark interesting?

We have a creek that runs through our neighborhood called Cottonwood Creek.
I know it has a lot of Cottonwoods growing along it;
so I guess that is how it got its name.

Here's more interesting information about Cottonwood Trees and how the pioneers used them.

Here in this part of Florida it is illegal to knowledge cut down a cottonwood tree. I have never seen one up close, and have always wonder what they look like. Huge and the bark is unusual. Thanks for the info. 🐓🐓

You are welcome!

We used to have those trees growing along the road near my house. Every spring when we wanted to open the windows there was fluff inside :p
It's kind of cute to see the seeds in the air. Like snow in spring.

Yes I agree!

Thank you for sharing @violetmed. I haven't seen cottonwood trees in Korea but I remember seeing them in the Midwest. That is a giant of a tree and the bark seems to tell the story of hidden faces.

Deb and I were at a nursery once and the air was white with cottonwood fluff - First time I was exposed to this natural pollution, other than the green cloud coming from my 50 ft tall evergreen on my front lawn :)

Haha, that's funny! I've never experienced that with an evergreen tree - I've just visited the mountains of New Mexico and Colorado (lots of evergreens) in the winter or summer so I guess I missed out on that fun experience!

it's literally a green cloud - what I imagine mustard gas would look like, only more fragrant :)

We are more apt to call them poplar in these parts. They are a tall tree, for sure. Fortunately, the poplar seed doesn't cause me any allergy woes. So I'm a fan:) Wonderful shots, Violet:)

many people have strong allergy on it
but I like them;) like snow in summer;)

So this is what it looks like where you live! Nice and calm villa suburb?

Yes, it’s a suburb of Dallas.

Thank you for always teaching me and showing me new things.

They havent started yet here, but we have loads of them. I need to get a video of them falling like snow!

Yes please on the video!
