Leaf-Footed Pine Seed Bug

Leaf-footed Pine Seed Bug Nymphs

These are true bugs with piercing, sucking mouth parts in the family Coeridae. They suck the sap from developing pine cones of different conifers.

They also feed on the seeds.

These are the nymphs of the Leptoglossus occidentalis pictured here.

They are orange in color and after a few molts they become a reddish brown color. These photos were taken over a period of time so you would be able to see the difference in their size, shape and color.

Thanks for looking!

They sure are! Thanks for adult picture. : )

Wow, interesting sequence. Are these also the ones that can pretty much decimate whole forests, eventually causing the trees to go all barren and brown? I've seen some of that in Colorado.

=^..^=

No, these don't do damage to pine trees but the pine cones might be seedless. They are a nuisance in the fall when they try to get into buildings and homes to keep warm for the winter. They don't bite but they sure do stink if you crush them. I have no idea what can cause the trees to go barren and that sure must be sad to see that.
Thanks for stopping by! : )

Not sure how to react to that. They seemed harmless, then you wrote "piercing, sucking mouth parts". Are the pine trees still healthy?

HaHa! They sound and look like they could do serious harm. Yes, the pine trees are still healthy. The only damage they do is to the pine cones because the seeds fail to develop. They don't bite people but can be a big nuisance in the fall when they try to get into homes to stay warm.

That's good to know about the pine trees. Not so great about them getting into houses, though. I'm usually a live and let live kind of person, when it comes to insects and whatnot, but once they start getting into food or your clothes or something like that, I'd be busting out the insect spray.

I hear ya! I used to be petrified of all insects but know I enjoy most of them, as long as they don't touch me. Now spiders are a whole different story. I try my best to catch and release but I am screaming the whole time. Insects need to be on the outside looking in. LOL!

The adult reminds me of a stink bug. Are they ever called that?

Many of the leaf-footed bugs get confused with stink bugs. These are not stink bugs but they do stink if they get crushed. Maybe that is what causes the confusion. : )

That's useful to know!
