Monarch Butterfly on a Thistle Flower

in nature •  6 years ago

I found this beautiful Monarch in a field feeding on nectar of this thistle flower last July.

Butterflies have their very own built in straws which is called a proboscis, to sip the nectar. The proboscis can be seen in the following photos if you look closely. They keep their proboscis curled up under their chin and roll it out when they are ready to feed. I was very thirsty when I took these photos and wished that I could join the monarch to wet my whistle, however, after rubbing under my chin, I just couldn't find my straw.

Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks sweet @shasta! I love the 2 together also. I have better close-ups of a monarch on different flowers which I am saving for later. Saving all of the best for last. Love that tag too! : )
