These lizards are scientifically known as Basilisks. They are renowned for being able to run across water hence the informal reference to Jesus Christ!

They use their back legs (bipedal) to pedal across the water's surface at lightening speed. They usually use this tactic to escape predators when the camouflage in the undergrowth is not sufficient to conceal their presence. They are found from Central America to some countries in South America and feed mainly on insects and berries. When I was in the cloud forest of Costa Rica I was lucky enough to see one flying over the water's surface - it was truly exhilarating!!! Indeed, they can reach speeds of 11 km/hr on the ground and 8 km/hr on water.

So how do they run on water?

They have long toes in their hind limbs with webbing in-between that unfold creating pockets of air underneath that give the lizard lift!
