El pulpo morado fue una de las 11 nuevas especies encontradas durante una expedición
a gran profundidad en la costa atlántica de Canadá en julio de 2010.
La expedición de 20 días de duración, en la que colaboraron científicos canadienses y españoles, tenía como objetivo descubrir la relación entre los corales de agua fría y otro tipo
de criaturas del fondo marino en un entorno todavía por estudiar.
Para ello utilizaron un ROV llamado ROPOS para sumergirse en las costas de
Terranova con una profundidad máxima de 3.000 metros.
