While working from home yesterday I spotted something I had never seen before.

Who is this little fellow?

I noticed him first thing in the morning, but at lunch he was still around. I got out my good camera to get a close up.

Turns out it is a Red Breasted Sapsucker!

Sapsuckers are a type of woodpecker. This one is found on the North American west coast from Alaska all the way to Northern California. The internet tells me they come down from the mountains and spend winters near the coast.

Sapsuckers drill little holes into a tree’s bark to eat the sap. They also dine on small bugs attracted to the sap.

This sapsucker has been busy!

Close up of the sapsucker’s handy work.

He spent all day yesterday feasting on our tree and was back today for more.

It is great to have a moment to appreciate wild life in an urban area.

Also spotted today... SEALS!!!

There are 3 in this photo. Can you spot them?

This picture is crap because I took it with my iPhone, but seeing seals is always exciting.

The moms bring their pups to a marina near our house this time of year. It’s a relatively safe spot for them to chill while mama seal looks for food.

Any interesting critters in your corner of the world? Would love to hear about them in the comments.

Cheers! 🍻
