Lakeside with the local Waterfowl - Part 2 Ring-billed Gulls

in naturesbeauty •  8 years ago  (edited)

The Gull represents versatility, freedom and
a carefree attitude in Native American symbolism.

Gulls (larus delawarensis) often referred to as Seagulls are a very common bird found near fresh and salt water locations, as they can drink either type of water. They contain a special pair of glands above their eyes that flushes the salt from their systems. They are one of the few animals that can drink both types of water.

The Ring-billed Gull is approximately 17-21 inches (43-54cm) in length. When full grown, about 3 years old the gulls wingspan can be up to 41-46 inches (105-117 cm).

These clever birds pass down their learned behaviors from one generation to another. They are very resourceful scavengers when finding food to eat and often group together to be more successful. At the lake nearby, they flock to be fed by the visitors at the pier. Another favorite place not far from my home is a shopping plaza with a McDonalds. They love to congregate there for daily helpings of french fries from the lunch goers. They are not fussy about what they will consume, which is almost anything. ;-)

The Seagulls are another bird that mates for life. They average 2-4 eggs per nesting and each parent sits on the eggs in a depression in the ground. The nests are lined with grass and reeds from the surrounding waterways. These very social, oriented birds work together to raise their young. Offspring are supported by many males in the flock to help raise and protect the young until breeding age.

Ring-billed Gull

You can determine this gull by the notable black ring around the yellow bill towards the tip. Their backs and wings are always gray, the wings are tipped in black. These birds are commonly found in the Great Lakes region, Canada and northern New England.
