The water cycle, also called hydrological cycle, describes the continuous movement of water above, and below the surface of the earth. Over time, the amount of water on the earth remains fairly constant, but the distribution of water in the main reservoirs of ice, fresh water, salt water, and atmospheric water is variable according to a wide range of climate variables. Water moves from one reservoir to another through physical processes such as evaporation, condensation, precipitation, infiltration, surface runoff, and underground flow, such as from a river to the ocean, or from the ocean to the atmosphere. In this way, water undergoes different forms: liquid, solid (ice) and vapor.
