(This is an opinion on the article Carmelo Anthony says conversation with Phil Jackson was ‘short,’ reiterates commitment to Knicks by Stefan Bondy for New York Daily News on January 18, 2017.)

It’s been speculated for yyyyeeeaaarrrsss that Carmelo Anthony would be traded by the New York Knicks. But, when and how?

Melo wants to stay a Knick for life with his no-trade clause. Knicks’ President of Basketball Operations Phil Jackson wants him out though.

Something’s gotta give (so, they say).

Possible trades have been subject of rumors for years, but it never happened. After a ton of personnel and coach changes, the Knicks are still a (very) bad team in New York’s big market!

Phil’s recent actions and words hurt Melo so badly it’s getting to him. You can see annoyance in his play and body language on the court.

With not a lot of interest in his high-valued contract, Melo needs to make it work. And to his credit, he reiterated to stay and (try to) win in New York.

Phil Jackson’s contract is about to end (like Melo) in 2 years. This might be the real reason why he’s drastic in his ways (No Zen Master there) to win now.

But in the middle of this power play, there is a team with a bright future in possible franchise player Porzingis and (surely) the right coach in Hornacek.

All the Knicks have to do now is to tell Phil and Melo to shut it and try to make it work. By next year, there might be a possibility that Phil would be gone and Melo too.

Clearly both men are just living off their past glories.
