It exists in the United States, in Nebraska, a village with only one inhabitant, Monowi.
Elder Elsie Eiler, now almost 85 years old, has become the only inhabitant of Monowi since 2004. Elsie is mayor, treasurer, librarian, bartender and much more in her country and despite her age she continues to perform all her tasks, paying taxes to herself.
Elsie was born and raised in Monowi, married her husband Rudy at the age of 19 and after a period in Kansas City where she worked for an airline she returned to Monowi to reopen the tavern that belonged to her father. Already at that time the population of Monowi was beginning to decrease; if in 1930 it had 150 inhabitants, in 1980 it fell to 18, until Elsie and Rudy were not the only two inhabitants of Monowi. Their two children have also abandoned them in search of job opportunities elsewhere.
In 2004, however, Rudy died and since then Elsie has remained the only inhabitant of Monowi. Probably we hold the record about the 50% decrease in population,"Elsie joked some time later.
Despite her age, Elsie continues to open her father's tavern every day, where regular customers come from far away, and the library opened in memory of her husband Rudy. It is not uncommon for tourists from all over the world to visit the only country in the United States with a single inhabitant; so far four guestbooks have been filled.
