Planning a new pyjama top - considerations...

in needleworkmonday •  6 years ago  (edited)

Here's a pyjama top I made for my husband last year.

I used my overlocker ( serger ) to do all of the seams. It was the only way to deal with that knit fabric as I my normal sewing machine would not have been able to do the job.

Not all of the seams were perfect. For instance the bottom section doesn't quite line up :

I can live with that - it doesn't show and it doesn't make a difference. I just need to be more careful this time.

The collar is also not so straight.

I sewed that contrast neckline after all the seams were finished and it was quite hard. Again I just need to take my time a bit more and not rush things.

When I made that pyjama top I actually just copied this pyjama top below so I didn't actually follow a pattern. The process was simple but 'fiddly' because I felt nothing lined up:

It has seen better days and you can see my 'darnings'. The problem I had last year while trying to 'copy the silhouette' is that the seams are not straight. This is what I get when I try to straighten the top :

In order to make a new top this time I will just have to be very careful. I have already lined up the fabric and it's a complete 'upcycling' project. I will be using three t-shirts that we no longer wear to make the top :

These two t-shirts will be the sleeves :

This very grey t-shirt will be the body of the t-shirt.

Keep tuned to the next episode... Hopefully the main table will be a bit emptier then and I can cut all the sections.

This time I will definitely be making a paper pattern. Last year it was an experiment so I didn't keep the sections... Now I know it can work so I will be more organised 😆

Thanks for reading.

I'll be interested to see how it turns out! I think gray with white sleeves will look really nice.

Thank you @mtnmeadowmomma...
I will be reporting shortly on the progress 😁

wow, that's greate

Thanks @koteikonyamme 😁

it's great that you tried to make such a project !!!! we often have things that we do not wear and we throw them away. if you can sew a new thing from these things, it's wonderful because you save money and get useful skills. I still have not the courage to do something like that, but I really want to :) Your example encourages me, too, to try to do this

Thank you @tali72.

Learning from mistakes is a part of the process, glad you are comfortable doing so! It looks quite comfy to lounge around in.

I am indeed @jamethiel...
Some mistakes are easier to accept, but I pride myself in tolerating my mistakes 😆

"The collar is also not straight" I had to laugh... Up today I have sewn two sweater, and both are... how should I call it... creative? I found it so hard to make the neckline. Mine is not only also not straight is furthermore so wide I unknowingly made an off-the-shoulder sweater. And it doesn’t lay flat… sigh.
You did a great job, the little irregularity you mentioned are not important. I am so curios to see how you will make the upcycling project! I am pondering to make a sweater from my 'skirt scraps' but after my failed attempt I am intimidated. (I used a book for pattern making with jersey fabric. It is called 'sewing without pattern' but in reality you learn to make the pattern yourself.)

Great to see you're back @neumannsalva ! I missed reading your posts. Hope your break was okay 😊
It is intimidating and you must remember not to hold your breath too much while sewing 😆
I will try and take lots of photos because I am planning to use the seams of the t-shirt for the cuffs to avoid having to cut too much fabric - I'm all for saving time / effort / fabric...

I think it is so neat that you are putting together pieces from recycled garments and making new ones! What a great way to be resourceful. As @jamethiel stated you are learning from your mistakes...it will only help you get better!!! Looking forward to seeing how this turns out! 😉

Thank you @crosheille.
I do have more jersey fabric but I thought it would be a pity not to re-use the fabric of the other t-shirts. It also saves me wondering how to hem or do the cuffs 😊

You’re welcome!! That’s awesome!

You make me wanna invest in a serger now @cryptocariad. I like the raglan sleeves and your work last year already look good even without a pattern. Can't wait to see the new one this year :)

Thank you @marblely.
... I have to confess I haven't done much sewing lately (mainly alterations to t-shirts), but I'm keen to start again 😊

La mejor experiencia es aprender de lo que nos sucede, bien sea bueno o no tan bueno. Me encantan los proyectos de reciclaje. Seguramente te va quedar como quieres. Quedo atenta al próximo episodio. Saludos.

Así espero @jicrochet ! ahora voy a ver tu abanico 😊

You are so talended whipping out a PJ top like its nothing! And now making a new one =D

When I rush anything I've learnt now to put it down otherwise i ruin it. It's very hard to do, i know how you feel ha ha

Thank you @pumkinsandcats !
There's only a few 'windows of opportunity' (: time and energy) so I always like finishing things 'asap' 😊
