NeedleworkMonday: Of Socks and Yarn Bras [De/Eng]

Spiral Socks

A little progress with the spiral socks - one finished and the other half, there I just started with the cuff. I'll make an afterthought heel on the second so that it looks "spirally" looks compared to the first sock. So they become less and less similar - doesn't matter ;)

I made arrows on one picture to show where I started a new yarn. I'm already looking forward to putting on my socks. Some women from my knitting circle have promised me that they will give me leftover yarn they would have thrown away in the future.

Yarn Bras

What's she talking about now, some might ask. What on earth is a Yarn Bra? Well, some of you will know it when wool skeins fall apart when you've used some yarn (I think @danmaruschak experienced that if I remember some of his photos correctly). This happens especially when you pull the thread from the inside out of the ball (which is recommended because it twists the yarn less). To prevent this disintegration you have Yarn Bras.

They're not for sale or if only as a bonus - I buy mine in the vegetable department of the supermarket. I also know people who use nylon socks. In any case, a skein (or a cake) of yarn stays in the right shape, you can work well with it and store it better.

Ha ha ha ha ha, I legit thought you had knitted yourself a bra, not that you were talking about reining in wayward yarn balls. XD
I love those socks! They are great. :D

Hey, that's an official name - you can buy such things for a ridiculous amount of money!

That's a clever idea!

Right on! Some really good tips. :)

That’s a great tip, and your socks are darling.

As @phoenixwren I assumed you made a woolly bra :-DD I thought: 'ok, why not, but perhaps a bit itchy' But ok, I now understand you made your wool a bra :-D I never have heard about this and have to admit I always use the outer thread (I am too lazy to fumble the inner one out of the skein)
And your socks look amazing and I am very curious how you secure the yarn-ends (I am hoping you have a secret technique which makes sewing unnecessary)

I'm lazy - of course I don't sew ;)

There are two ways. One is the "Magic Knot" ("Frankfurter Knoten" auf Deutsch, Elizzz shows it), the other way is with securing the old yarn with the new and vice versa. When I've only 20 cm left of the yarn I start with the new yarn. I wind the new yarn around the 'active thread', make a stitch, wind it again around the yarn I'm knitting with, next stitch. I do that for about 6 stitches and start knitting with the new yarn while wrapping the old one around the working thread for the next 6 stitches. When the sock is finished... well - it might be a kind of sewing. With a darning needle I pull the yarn end back throught the overlap, cut it and that's enough. That works especially with socks and other things where the inside tends to stick together or felts itself a bit. I can add a photo later :)

hach, ich bin beruhigt... Shortly I was frightened about a new found love to sew knitted things :-DDD
I think I already tried out the magic knot but did not trust its stability. And with the second technique, I am not sure if I understand it (mein Räumliches denken ist nur mittel ausgeprägt)
But I would so like to use all the yarn rests without sewing all the 💩 in. I still have two!! whole cardigans lying around which must me finished (buttons and yarnends....). I really don't like to do this.

Me neither. I hate it with the passion of a thousand fiery suns... For my old Singer sewing machine I had a thingie that could sew on buttons. Ask me why ;)

So strange that something so simple like sewing on buttons (or sewing in yarn ends) can arouse such strong feelings. I still have hope to convince Silvia (the artist friend who is sometimes on my photos) to sew my cardigans. She hates to wash the dishes and I offered to wash the mugs in her studio (huge number of mugs, from her students) if she finishes my cardigans.... we will see....

Hey you are too strong ... :D Happy to happened to see you on Steem Monsters!!

hee hee hee :)))) great idea !!!! thank!!!!!
