Needleworkmonday: Zero Waste Sewing / Resteverwertung

Initial tests / Erste Versuche

Some time ago I received two sample books as a gift from an upholstery company. These fabric samples are slightly larger than letter format and come in very different colours, patterns and materials. I want to sew some project bags for my knitting and crochet projects.

These are my first attempts. I haven't sewed for a long time and I have to find my way back in. The shape of the bag is simple. At the bottom the folded corners (no idea what they are called or if there is a name for them at all), they make the bag stand by itself. The bags will be lined and have a zipper at the top. At the moment I'm helping myself with a simple drawstring and a cord. The next step is the lining and then I have to teach myself how to sew in a zipper...

The bag at the top with the diagonal seam looks good, I especially like the contrasts of the different fabrics at the bottom corner. But unfortunately the upholstery fabric lies there 8-fold due to these seams. This fits just under the foot of the sewing machine, but it is not transported anymore and so there are no clean seams. So in the future these diagonally divided bags only with thinner fabric.

Overview of the fabric samples / Überblick über die verschiedenen Stoffmuster

Below some details of a bag: Top left a bag from downside, right next to it a corner. Due to the type of the corners you can wrap the bottom (bottom right), the picture at bottom left shows how the wrapped bag looks from the other side. You can fold the bag easily or store it flat to save space.

What's on my needles

  • There is 5 g left of the first skein (of 4) of my Estuary shawl.
  • I've knitted a bit more than a third of the Silver Screen Scarf.
  • The Cool Clavicle Cover is in its fifth pattern repeat, probably half done - I don't know how long I want to make it.
  • I crocheted several of the spiral scrubbies I showed in my last Needleworkmonday post.
  • And - oops! - I started something new. A friend of mine has a new baby daughter and I'm knitting a cardigan. Pictures next week!

Bis denne

Nice use of the fabric samples. And I like that they can be flattened for storage.

I like that the bags stand up due to the corners.
Thanks for sharing

I totally love the way these project bags look with that upholstery material! They look so solid and sturdy and the pattern designs on the fabric are very pretty.

I look forward to seeing how your experience with the zipper goes. I admit I’ve held off a little on going to sewing class because next class I’ll be sewing that zipper on. 😬🥴😅

But thanks to @apanamamama’s post today, it reminded me that time is ticking and her baby will be here soon. The bunting I’m working on is now for her baby! 😃

Great Idea.

There are some lovely fabrics in your samples. I like the design of the project bags, the folded corners allow room to expand for projects and lay flat for storage. Excellent :)
You are enjoying your sewing machine :)

knitting bag for projects is wonderful! I carry my projects in a package and it is not very convenient. Packages are torn, I replace them with new ones and so on all the time. very interesting what kind of yarn you chose for a cardigan :)
