Upcycle project: cargo pants into a shoulder bag

Thank you my steemit friends for ideas on how to transform pants into a bag on last post!

There was idea for using pockets as a focal point, great! And also making inner layer with different color fabric. I thought about it, i didn't make inner layer to avoid becoming heavy, but I did think of color combination!

My son's cargo pants is gray with a bit of orange stitches so I prepared additional orange fabric and orange kids belt that was lying around the house.

DSC_3898.JPG
First.I cut out the big pockets.

DSC_3938.JPG
The length of 2 pockets together was almost 30cm/12 inches. Perfect and just the length that I was looking for!!

DSC_3940.JPG
The zipper on the pocket was broken, so I cut a bit of the belt just to cover up the zipper and sewed on.

Then sewed 2 pockets together, so this will be the front side.

DSC_3942.JPG
Then I made the side piece which is on the left of this picture, and backside which is on the right.

Both had to patch a little bit to be the size that I wanted. And for the side piece, as you could see, I sewed on a strip of orange color for a high light.

DSC_3943.JPG
I sewed on the side piece to the front first. The corner, it was sharp straight angle in the beginning, but it looked too sharp. This bag is for casual so I redid it to make a round corner.

DSC_3944.JPG
Backside also stitched on. By this time, my thumb skin became so thick like a crab shell of over working on dense textile😅

DSC_3945.JPG
This is where the bag would close using zipper. I looked at the remaining fabric which wasn't much so I withdrawn the flappy lid to close like postman's bag. I cut out the waist area and undone the stitches to take the elastic off.

DSC_3946.JPG
Now it is sewen on the body.

Lastly, with the remaining materials, I patched up the shoulder strap, and I'm done!!

It's all done by hand sewing. It took about 3 days and maybe tomorrow because I'm still taking care of the edges😁

Still, a fun project, a puzzle, to take my minds off for a change❤

All the images are taken by me, and first time to share online.

Thank you, @superoo7-dev, I thought it was too late for your curation. Regards to you.

That turned out to be really beautiful and to think that you made it out of cargo pants. It's just wow!!

The orange color you added gave it a pop of color, adding "spice" to whole look.

Thanks for showing the steps! It took you long, but the result sure did pay off.

Thank you @audreybits😊 I guess the trick is enjoy whatcha doin'😀😀😀 tough road, same road but burden turns into excitement 🎶

True....

☺️

Wow, that looks amazing. The orange really sets off the bag. And it's hand sewn, that is impressive. I could see that bag being featured by a designer someday.

Thank you @coinsandchains!

Orange and gray are one of my favorite colour combination, with white is even better. This bag with white T-shirt....😊

And such a complement...pleasure @coinsandchains, I've got nothing else to give you besides my works though😜 very encouraged, so more upcycle project coming up!!

Excellent, I think I had a pair of white cargo shorts with red lining around the pockets.
Complements and thank you's are my specialty, and I expect nothing but the pleasure of giving them. I look forward to the next project.

Sorry for the late repy, I witnessed the death of my handphone😭 RIP....

Yah, sounds good, could add the flappy thing to close if the pants are long, enough material I 🤔

Amazing job, it is a really great bag, and if you don show how you did I will never guess that came out a cargo pants..
Thank you for share!!

Thank you @tahiaarq, such compliment😍😍😍

That is some very precise and imaginative work! I like the (almost) finished article, it looks very professional, but I am a bit worried about your crab shell thumb skin :(

Thank you @shanibeer, you are so kind😊 the skin is starting to peel😨 but no worries, no pain!

Congratulations on your curie vote!

😊😊😊🍀

Hey @naomipangolin! That is a very nice bag and it looks so professionally made! I really like it and you hand-sewed the entire bag? Wow, how do you do it? And the cargo pants can be quite thick at certain parts. So happy for you!

Thank you @marblely😊😊😊 I just simply couldn't through that cool pickets away😂 I guess the trick is the additional orange color🍀❤ thanks again

Great job transforming the pants into a bag. Almost didn't recognize it from pants.

Thank you @viverridae! I sacrificed my finger, still okay la😂😂😂

The bag is unique, but I'm sorry about your poor thumb, @naomipangolin!

Thank you @cryptocariad❤ hahaha, I can't feel mt tips because the skin became so thik now, but all woth to recieve your appreciation😍😍😍

Thank you @curie! A wonderful surprise from morning😊 thanks again❤

I just love it when people recycle articles of clothing into something new, and extend the life of it. You really did an amazing job, @naomipangolin! Happy #NeedleworkMonday to you, my dear!

Thank you @crystalize❤ you are so right about that! I even upcycled hubby's shirt into kid's house wear. I just couldn't let it go when I especially see a sparkle in them. Aren't we a puzzle solver or treasure hunter? Thanks again😘

Great and absolutely creative idea from you💡 to turn something „old“ into somthing new. Today much people throw so much things away... without thinking 💭 a few minutes about it.

So up for that 👍

By the way, my wife would love this new bag :-)

Thank you @avizor😊 my friend told me she rummages her neighbor's barbage, well, I think that's too much😂, but yah, I definitely agree with you. Glad you and hope your wife would like it😘🍀

Wow fantastic!! The bag turned out so well and that was a great idea of making the pockets the focal point. You definitely can’t tell this bag was made out of cargo pants, job well done!

Congratulations on the curie upvote! It was well earned ;)

Thank you @needleworkmonday!! It's like a birthday today😂 so glad you like it, love and hug😘😘😘

😃😉

I love it 😍! It's so beautiful and the orange highlights give it a good look.

Thank you @wondermaey! Very encouraged❤

Awesome work! Found you through the #needleworkmonday community.

Thank you @metzli! And wonderful knowing you, thanks again for dropping by😊

Great Sharing to us too!! @naomipangolin Upvoted your post and followed you! Keep in touch!!

Thank you @michaelchieng! Hi from Sabah, nice knowing you😊

Interesting, I'm drawing some fashion ideas with this post. I got several worn out pants and I got no clue what to do with them beyond the regular donation drives. This one gives me room for some sewing experiments. Perhaps expand the idea beyond a simple recycled bag. The possibilities! congratulations on the curie upvote and you did a great job recycling old clothing :D

Thank you @adamada!! And I'm glad my post inspired you!😊
Brilliant!! I'm positively await your work @adamada!!
It could have been a backpack, or the ... I don't know what to call this additional pockets and holder you could tie and dangle on the car seats? Yah imaginations do expand😊😊😊

Hey, @naomipangolin.

Well done. Anyone seeing this around who doesn't know it's made out of your son's cargo pants aren't going to suspect a thing. :) It turned out really nice, and the outside pockets, their size, plus the buttons make them extra useful and more secure.

It would be great to see it filled up and being carried around and seeing if there's any recognition by anyone as to what it was made out of. If someone asked, you could say, "It's a Cargo," and then watch them think about that. :)

😂thank you @glenalbrethsen, you make me feel my bag "Cargo" does worth something, even me myself feeling better, uplifted😊 thanks for the laugh, too. I needed that😂

Well, you're welcome, @naomipangolin. For the laughter and the uplifting. It really is a cool bag, and a great use for pants that would otherwise go unused. :)

😁👍👍👍

😁👍👍👍

@naomipangolin This is a brilliant idea! I can't believe you hand sewed it! It's creative and looks very trendy!

Thank you for your appreciation @ilsaione❤ This was too bulky and complicated for machine job for me. I was sooo couch potatoe until I finished it😂

@naomipangolin You did a great job with it! I like crafts but I am not so good with the sewing. Maybe I should try something simple first! Do you have any suggestions?

Anything small from shushu the hair band to big as pillow covers!! Rectangular and straight shapes are easy. Luncheon mat?

But not to force yourself. I wanted to salvage nice pockets on the pants, so idea of making bag came up from there. 😊

Or another way is keep things until the needs come up. Like me, my son sometimes having cooking class at school and needs apron. And now I'm thinking to make it out of hubby's long sleeve shirt I was keeping for few years😂

And not to be a perfectionist from the beginning, it's ok. I didn't even used ruler on my bag project either😂

Good luck!!

@naomipangolin You didn't measure the bag project? Oh my! That came out wonderfully for not doing that! I thought for sure you did! Even excellent job! Kudos to you!

Just measured once, but no lines drawn on it. Too lazy😂

Still incredible work! Not many people possess that skill. I know I don't but wish I did! I've been working on a quilt top for about 12 years now.

Wow, such a long time! Sometimes a single project becomes a life project😊❤

What a great job you did with this project. My mom sewed and I tried to sew in a high school class. I failed! All of my kid's clothes went to the donation center after he was dome with them. I can appreciate how your hands must have been sore from this task!

Thank you so much for your appreciation @fitinfun❤ I believe donation is another way round, I am sure people appreciation your action! Besides, after I cut them all up into pieces, lucky it turned into a bag😂

That is pretty cool!!!i always like the idea to recycle things we have at hime to give them a second life. The result is really looking good:)

Thank you @drawmeaship!!! I am so glad that you like my project❤. My kids still say "no, that still looks like my cargo pants", but you drove my disappointment away😁. Thanks again😁

Hooo nooo lol i think it looks pretty good and not like a pants anymore:D

😂😂😂

@naomipangolin I am SEW impressed! I've had a pair of my husband's jeans that I want to remodel as a diaper bag but I'm too intimidated. This cargo bag is stunning! Well done

😂 thank you @buckaroo😂 diaper bag sounds good, don't give up. In my case, my husband jeans....all of his, he just doesn't want to let them go, wore them until it gets so thin you could see through his boxers😂 I couldn't work on any of them!

Oh don't get me wrong @naomipangolin! My husband is exactly the same. He'll wear them until I can't patch them any more. But this pair he obviously bought in a rush and they are a couple sizes too small. Because we homestead we are very far from the city and some places we only see once or twice a year. So no returning of the mini jeans

Men...😂

Great job..cheers

Congratulations to your @curie vote! And so well earned. Your bag is great and a real design item <3

Thank you @neumannsalva❤ I also like your sweaters❤
But don't tell anyone, just like your sweaters, I actually undid and redo sewing, err... ummm...many many times more, so many times😂. Blame on my not-using-ruler habit and guess work. Very glad I finished this bag!

I really love these kind of upcycle projects to be honest! My mother used to do these things when I was a child. She had done the fashion academy when she was younger, so there were a lot of things created from my old clothes like jeans too .. This one turned out very nice! I think you're very creative, and it's good to recycle, oh I mean upcycle ;)

Thank you @anouk.nox! Wow to your mom!! Yes, its really nice to make them reborn, especilly when the fashion trend is out or like me, my kids out sized them. Well since quite a number of steemians like my project, now I regret not buying more of those cargo pants for them😂 I think it would look nice to make small backpacks? Just wondering😊

This is awesome! One day when I’m big I’ll sew beautifully like this 💖

Thank you @wildwanderer
