Needlework Monday: Mending Madness

in needleworkmonday •  6 years ago

Greetings, needleworkers! I actually did a bunch of sewing this week, but it was all hand repair of things in my mending pile, so I don't have any beautiful photos of completed projects, but it sure feels good to whittle down the stack a bit!

Mend ALL THE THINGS!

I mended three out of four handles on a bag I've had to mend before - the handles, adding a patch to a hole in the bottom - this time adding a supporting patch to the handle itself. The bag is beautiful and big and the handles are long and nice, but the fabric seems to tear if you look at it funny, let alone lug home heavy groceries in it.

Then I mended the seam of one pillowcase that was coming apart, and then three holes in another, which were not at the seams, just the fabric was tearing apart. It was a pillowcase I had made out of a flannel material several years ago for a big square pillow that none of my standard pillowcases would fit. The pillow has been sitting naked on my couch as where-the-couch-is-broken-and-caves-in support, underneath blankets, since the pillowcase tore, lol. Now it can have a case again! I've been thinking the couch (which was a freebie from a neighbor that moved out and left it) is so damaged, I will likely just toss it and revert to using my papasan, which doesn't have a cushion anymore, but if I use my big square pillow and a pile of blankets, that should work, I think. But when I moved the couch into my apartment, I had an asthma attack doing so, and I was healthier then - I need help to move it out.

Anyway, that's my thrill-a-minute project list for the week! How's your mending pile looking?

That minnow your mama always warned you about

It’s always a good feeling when we can pick up a pile of things that’s been needing attention and some TLC! Good for you for getting it done.

Thanks! :)

I don't think I dare look at my mending pile!
Well done on getting through it. It's so satisfying, isn't it!

Extremely satisfying!

Yay! So happy for you!! My mending pile keeps growing. It is just so hard to find the mood to do it. I am hoping to find inspiration in yours and start mending my pile soon. Let me read your post and see your beautiful, happy face with the mended pile a few times to get that mending chi :)

Hahaha, "mending chi" is accurate! Mine tends to sit for ages anf then I have a spurt like this. I'm hoping I can get through it all before I peter out! LOL

Oh please visit me and go on with the mending (but use my pile :-DDD) I find it so tough to start all this mending, so a big hurray for you to tackle it. I also have a torn bed sheet, two jeans which are too wide at the waist and I bought a veryyyyyy cheap dress which fits perfect on the bottom half, but the sleeves are so tight I can barely lift my arms. I already have ripped the seams and found a stripe of fabric which fits.... but now the dress is waiting for me to sew :-D
The only mending I did was for my mother’s clothes :-)
But after reading your post, I think I will start with the dress <3

I find it very difficult to start, too! That's why I gotta ride this inspiration as far into the basket of mending as it will take me. LOL.
I know there's another shopping bag in there, and I think a pair of shorts need a button, too, but I don't know what else.

Can't UV... VP low. !tip 0.5

Well done for all that mending. I noticed that some of my linen pillowcases are starting to get small holes ... I will have to do some housekeeperly things. Is it relaxing mending things? I imagine it can be quite meditative. Moving heavy items is a problem when you are on your own. I hope you find a solution 😊

I like to do it while I watch a movie or a TV show. I hate sitting there doing nothing with my hands. That's also when I knit a lot, lol.
So basically - it's relaxing when I'm binge watching a show. ;)

it looks scary! :)))) Of course it's bad that you had an asthma attack. probably there was something in this furniture that caused it. what you did, at first glance, invisible work. it accumulates and then it takes a long time to do all this: sew, patch, repair. but it must be done! it's nothing you can do!
