Dennis the Menace was one of a series of comic strips in the Beano, a popular comic in many childhoods, including mine. The children in the Beano were always subversive, often unruly, and frequently got one over on the adults.

I was always very taken with Dennis's red and black striped jumper (a similar one was worn by Minnie the Minx, with a fetching black beret). Last summer (or maybe the summer before), I bought a job lot of cotton/linen mix yarn in a sale, in two colours, enough to make a top. I've been wondering what to make with it ...

Then @cryptocariad posted news about the latest edition of Knitty.com, "the longest running free knitting magazine on the web", which included a pattern called Opportune:

I liked the relaxed look of Opportune, the easy construction and, especially, the hood. I've been wanting to learn how to design and add a hood to garments. The pattern uses simple garter stitch edgings, and introduced me to a new technique: shaping using short rows and a technique called wrap and turn (w&t), which prevents holes appearing when you turn in short row knitting.

I'm still working mainly on learning construction of garments, plus the yarn I was going to use has a thick and thin construction, which creates texture in the knitting, so I decided to stay with superfast stocking stitch rather than the lace pattern in Opportune.

I've chosen to knit the body in one piece, back and fronts together. I'm going to try the wrap and turn short rows for shaping the shoulders, and then pick up stitches around the armholes to create some simple sleeves (probably three-quarters). I'm hoping I have enough yarn for the hood!

Here's the foundation 2x2 rib and the start of of the stocking stitch and stripes. I was planning to do a swatchtape to test the tension but, having got this far, I couldn't bear to do the rib all over again. The flat measurements (ie the knitting was not stretched) were right for my body measurements and I know my tension gets more relaxed as the knitting progresses, so I went for it :)

It's always touch and go when you have an idea if your head - is it going to work? I was pleased when the stripes started to match the image in my head. I liked the texture of the yarn as it was knitting up as well. The colours in this picture are probably closest to the colour of the yarn.

I cast off about ten stitches for under each arm and then continued knitting separate fronts and back, on the same circular needles, with three lots of yarn. Nightmare! The problem could be solved with a nice crocheted yarn pouch with eyelets, that held all the balls of yarn snugly and prevented them from becoming tangled. I'd use that method again if I was knitting a pattern across the fronts and back, but here I'm completing the remaining stripes separately with one ball of yarn on the needles at a time! The drape is gorgeous.

The top needs about three stripes to reach the top of the armholes and then I'll work out how to join the shoulders using wrap and turn short rows. How much yarn would you say is in a hood? About 50g? I might hold a ball back for that and see how much I have left for the sleeves.

Last week, @crosheille wrote about fitting a zip and it occurred to me that a nylon zip might be the right front fastening for this top. Has anyone any experience of sewing a zip into a knitted garment?

Haha I remember those Dennis the Menace toons but I only watched them when i was a little older, I wonder if they even make cartoons like that anymore, hopefully we will see you in your blue Dennis the Menace stripy top soon lol.

Where can you get a catapault these days? 😜

Thanks for the mention, @shanibeer - I like the denim colours of your yarn.

I remember sewing Dennis the Menace costumes for @jen0revision. It's her favourite character and she's still keen on stripes too ! She used to collect the magazines too :D

I'll be looking out for your zipper solutions as I remember my zippers making the front 'wavy' which was slightly annoying :D

Yes, there was a Dennis the Menace club, I think? I'm sure some of my nieces belonged to it 😎
You're right the wavy effect with zippers, I had one from Marks and Spencers like that.

Love the stripes! And you can do amazing things with short rows - either two-dimensional like @jamethiel's blanket or three-dimensional like short row heels in socks.

Though I don't really like wrap & turn, I prefer the way I learnt it, what's called "German short rows" in the English speaking knitting world: Here's a photo tutorial about it, Verypink Knits has a great video showing the technique. I think it's more simple and even more "invisible".

Yes, I think I use this method for socks and I hadn't noticed any holes appearing :) but interesting to learn other techniques sometimes. I'm just hoping @marblely sees my need for help and creates a crocheted yarn pouch with eyelets 😂🙏💪👍

Haha that will be an idea! Ooo i love how soft the piece looks @shanibeer! Oh you know what, I have watched some youtubes where crocheters use a shoebox and make slots to separate the different coloured yarns for mocha bags like this video

. Maybe this can help a bit?

That's a good idea! I will still think about the pouch, though, because of travelling - a shoebox would be okay at home, but a bit bulky for travelling :)

How odd, I didn't recognize your Dennis the Menace, the version that I am used too has blond hair and wears a blue and black striped shirt. Which does match the colors that you are using.
The project looks great so far! Love the colors and texture of the yarn.

There's a UK and a US version, as in so many things :)
Thanks, I'm enjoying it, the right combination of mindlessness and concentration!

You are very creative and talented. I love the colors and your pattern. I don’t have the patience yet to attempt a garment that requires that much of a time investment, but it is wonderful that you are sharing your skills with us.

Thank you 😊 One of the great things about #needleworkmonday has been realising how I want to spend my time. Although my father taught me to knit when I was about seven, I've only started to become proficient in the last two or three years. It's interesting watching your progress, because I see my own journey there. I'm really interested in knitting as an artform, and at the moment I'm building my skills and understanding. I try to knit every day, but that doesn't always happen, but it's that practice and growing a deep knowledge of myself and my materials that I'm aiming for.
On a lighter note 😊 - I'm becoming adept at adapting patterns to get a faster result. The work in the post was accomplished over about ten days and, work and family permitting, I'd like to complete it in the same amount of time.

Dang! If I could knit like that in 10 days then my whole wardrobe would be of handmade items. It would take me several months to do that type of work and it would not be pretty. I will continue to work and practice though because I am finding out that I am learning how to adapt in knitting what I already know how to do in crocheting. It is very educational watching this community share their talents and skills.

It is :)

I was thinking the same as @jamethiel, how different that Dennis looks. Makes sense about the UK and the US. Thanks for the shoutout! I love the style of that blouse and the stripes are so cute!

I wonder if @dizzyapple could give you some pointers. She puts zippers on her crochet pouches. I can imagine the application process would be about the same with knitting.

Nice color choices too!

Thank you 😊. That's a good idea about @dizzyapple, I'll have a browse through some of her posts 😍.

Sure!! 😉

Never heard about Dennis 😞 I guess he wasn’t popular in Germany... nevertheless I love striped knitted sweaters (especially in red/black) as they remind me of the eighties clothes. I wore such striped sweaters much later as a reminiscence to punk style 😂 I remember an older friend who had a huge ‚Teller‘ named hairstyle which I found super stylish and cool and he always wore this destroyed striped sweater.
But back to your sweater. I love the thick/thin wool: the thicker parts seem to form a pattern. So lovely 😊
And you knit incredibly fast, the body is almost finished - wow. I still have this one incompleted cardigan in my box of shame which has a similar construction. It is knitted bottom up with slanted shoulders which are built by wrap and turn short rows. But it is currently sleeping..... I hardly remember what I did (oh noooo, cold sweat on my forehead)

And with the hood... I only made one for a baby jacket in crochet, but I remember that it was really big in comparison to the cardigans body and used up much wool ....
