#needleworkmonday | Handmade Wardrobe - Summer Edit

in needleworkmonday •  5 years ago

The summer clearance sales are starting so I've been having a look at my favourite shops to see what's on offer. I have to start with Liberty's Tana Lawn Cotton and there's a great selection with prices ranging from £11.25-£17.50 per metre:

The English Creatives collection draws inspiration from seven eclectic home-grown muses from a decadent prince regent to a pioneering botanist, an aristocratic poet and gardener, a carefree ‘60s musician, a contemporary artist, an activist/actress and a children’s author.

Pattern Savannah's bold, geometric designs date from across the 20th century, many were originally inspired by the patterns and prints of traditional African fabrics and crafts.

But actually, I'm not buying any of those, though they are in my sights. Instead, I'm going with Joy and Sorrow, designed by Mo Coppoletta, an international tattooist.

Source Joy and Sorrow is derived from a fascination Mo has with nursery rhymes and their dark magic. He wanted to symbolise the Liberty peacock by using different kinds of birds. Mo adorned them with strings of pearls, deco brooches and surrounded them with dragonflies, all of which were inspired by Liberty archive prints from the 1920s.

I found a new supplier of independent sewing patterns Dragonfly Fabrics where I came across Sew Liberated. There's two patterns I really like:

Source The Gypsum Skirt has a comfortable waistband, drapey pockets and lots of flounce. The designer suggests you can layer it under or over dresses, wear it with a boxy top or cami, and shorten or lengthen the pattern depending on the season.

Source I'm planning to make a longer version of View A which has crescent-shaped French seamed pockets and flat-felled seam finishes of the four skirt panels. I had a similar skirt years ago, it was lovely to wear, so comfy, for some reason I discarded it before I had taken the pattern!

Source The Hinterland Dress has three sleeve options, partial or full button down plackets, customisable length and inseam pockets. The fit is loose, with side bust darts and a gathered skirt. You can also lengthen the bodice and hack it into a cropped top, too.

Source There's a tutorial on the Sew Liberated website for making the crop top version. I love the drawings showing all sizes and shapes of women.

Source I might try the Arenite trouser pattern as well.

I have a couple of weeks off soon and I'm looking forward to getting my sewing machine out and playing with some of these ideas. I've also been dreaming about getting an adjustable dress form. Apart from anything else, it would be a great prop for photographs!

Source What do you think? There's a local supplier, as well. Some might say it would be rude not to ;)

Lucky you @shanibeer bet your looking forward to the time off, to get your mind busy on crafting with the sewing machine and I would definitely say it's a yes for the adjustable dress form.

The website keeps on about the dress form being a lovely piece of furniture!

Those Liberty fabrics are really beautiful, the only problem is that there's so much to choose from, I just get overwhelmed and leave with nothing...
I suppose it would help if I had a precise dress idea before entering the shop :D
Love the fabric you chose by Mo Coppoletta!

I know exactly what you mean about the amount of choice - I've done the same thing myself!
The fabric is gorgeous, isn't it? That made the choice easier this time, it was so stunning!

Yes to all! The fabric with birds, dragonflies and pearls is absolutely stunning and I could imagine a long and wide dress with some ruffles.
Also, the Gypsum skirt. I stumbled upon it some time ago and was also very drawn to it. But I am still afraid to try me on another skirt (after the last fiasco with the a-line skirt) The elastic waist of the Gypsum is on the one side very comfortable, but I am not sure if it will ride upwards on my belly 😂 I would be highly interested, if you try the pattern out.
And with the dress form: @muscara mentioned one from Prym

With all my problems to get a good fit a dress form which resembles oneself would be amazing. But browsing through sewing forums, this seems to be the problem. They are seldom like the personal size and figure. I am looking forward to your experience….

I've been thinking about that A line skirt - I've never made one!
I don't think they are the most flattering shape!
I have a skirt with an elasticated waist and it is very comfortable, I haven't had any problems with it riding up or folding over. I would want a longer length skirt, though, I think.
I agree with you about dress forms - there are so many variations between women and their individual proportions, I'm not sure a dress form can truly replicate any individual. I've read about adding padding to the form for curvier proportions, but there are some things it is difficult to adjust for. But anyway, it might be easier to be able to hang a garment on something vaguely woman shaped to work on :)

The dragonfly and birds pattern is kinda cool!

It's pretty, isn't it?

Great fabric! Love the feathers and dragonflies and birds! All of those outfits will be nice, the dress with pockets will be great! Have fun making them!

It's fab, isn't it? :)
I like the dress, too. Spent the other evening looking at patterns and this is the one that stuck in my head, it seems so versatile.
How's it going? I see you've been flying back and forth.

Going good, about to board my flight to Boston and then sit and knit... or sleep... for 3 hours. :)

Good luck with your sewing! I love the fabric you chose. Will that be for the skirt?
I wanted an adjustable dress form for a long time, but couldn't afford one. A friend found a non-adjustable one at a garage sale for me and I tried that, but ended up almost never using it because I couldn't size with it (and it had some 1950s Barbie doll shape, lol). So yeah, I used it as a prop for Etsy photos and ultimately gave it away. 😅 An adjustable one might be truly useful!

The fabric is gorgeous, isn't it? I loved it as soon as I saw it. I'm thinking about a little suit - the panelled skirt and the cropped top (though with 3/4 sleeves), they could be worn together for a wedding I'm going to this summer, or as separates.
I'm hoping the dress form will help me with designing, not absolutely sure, though, as we come in a multitude of different proportions and these only have the 12 adjustments :) The local retailer says they have a huge stock of dress forms, so I might go for an afternoon and try them all out before making a decision.

Ooh, nice that you can try before you buy!
