Mitts

in needleworkmondays •  6 years ago  (edited)

Last year, I made some fingerless mitts and was fortunate to get the right dimensions the first time around. Then, I just kept making them, but I didn't write down the pattern. Definitely a case of beginner's luck!

So when I began making more pairs with the yarn I dyed last week, I was surprised to discover I have some bugs to work out. I see the bottom pink stripe is a little fatter than I want, and the placement of the thumb is a little high. The thumb wouldn't really be a problem if the mitt was longer, but thankfully people come in all different sizes, so I'm sure it will fit someone right.

With adjustments and a different motif, these mitts might end up being better even if they don't look like that now.

Also, don't think I'm super prolific! These are done partly on my machine. They are going to be sold, and I have to keep labor down as much as I can. Luckily, I will get the full amount minus credit card fees.

I found some alpaca/merino/cashmere yarn at the thrift store and started another pair, but the color isn't really inspiring. Since it's riskier to dye finished items, I'll keep it as is and finish them any way.

I will be dyeing more yarn this week, and will most likely be doing it by hand painting. I hope to post a tutorial for those interested.

Wow impressive! I don't know if I would say beginners luck... more like gifted! :)

These are very pretty.

Thanks @fiberfrau!

I love the colors and the design pattern on these mitts. Yes I’m sure they will fit someone since there are all shapes and sizes. I like the last pair too. I think it’s always good to have a solid color that matches more of your clothing. Sometimes simple is better ;)

Thanks @crosheille! Good point! I think I lose perspective sometimes.

😉

Definitely interested in the yarn painting process! And both sets of mitts are nice. As @crosheille mentioned, simple ones are nice when you want to match an outfit without standing out. Or if they are for someone who prefers simple items.

Thanks @jamethiel! Yeah, @crosheille did make a good point.

I like those mittens very much, and the fact they're half hand half machine knitted makes this an inspirational post to me, @kimmac. Of course I totally appreciate the effort gone into them regardless of whether they're machine made or not as I know what's involved in setting up and getting things right. I think it's not luck what you had but experience you have gained from making other garments.
I think that having some painted and some plain mittens adds to the variety you can offer when selling :D

Thanks @crytocariad. I did some lace ones on the machine last year, so I might do that again for even more variety.

I really love the mitts and admire your technique. Two color stranded knitting isn't for me, I always have problems to keep the tension even. I prefer double knitting even though most people find it more difficult ;)

Making your account grow here on Steemit is long and hard work. Do you know @letseat? It's a dapp for making reviews of restaurants/cafés: you put the app on your mobile phone, make a picture, write some words and post it. It won't bring much, most of the time 0,2 STU - but that's better than nothing. Or if you're an active person you could try Actifit - again an app for the mobile.

Thanks@muscara! I haven’t really worried too much about being so small. I will look into those two things you mentioned though.
