When I first dyed the yarn for this vest, I was a little disappointed in the brightness of the colors. Honestly, I was aiming for a more sophisticated palette, but it was meant for a toddler, so I embraced what I had and chose to go with playful and joyful.
I hand painted the yarn in knitted blanks, then unraveled them and reknitted them to preserve the color changes. I even chose to do the same for the solid color as I wanted a painterly effect for the finished garment.
The front was made a little shorter than the back, allowing range for an active child to run unencumbered by flapping fabric. And I also left the neckline low for easy entry and exit. In fact, before the neck was finished, I feared it was a little too low!
But everything looked okay on the dress form.

What a beautiful vest! Is that stranded knitting? That's one thing I still have problems with, can't manage the tension of the different threads ;)

Thanks @muscara! Yes, it is stranded knitting, but part of this piece was done on a machine. I do love stranded handknitting though and did a little of it for this piece. The neck and arm band plus the upper front piece. My suggestion is just to practice on swatches and the tension will even itself out eventually. Do you hold the yarn in two hands or one when you strand?

I knit continental and used a knitting thimble. Interestingly I have nearly none tension problems with double knitting and prefer that to stranded knitting. Probably I just need more experience with stranded knitting.
A friend of mine does tapestry crochet and I'm interested to see how crocheting with several colors works :)

Your work looks very beautiful and neat and it's also inspirational for me. I pass my knitting machine everyday, so seeing someone produce such delicate work inspires me to give it all another go.
Incidentally, a friend has recently bought a KH-230 (bulky machine I think). We need to change a few of the needles as they seem to be rusty :)
