The chief flight attendant at the Pan American airlines, India, sacrificed her life while saving the passengers from a hijacked flight in Karachi, Pakistan.
She was just 22 years old.

Incident took place on 05 September 1996, in Pakistan, where 4 armed men hijacked the plane consisting of 361 passengers and 19 crew members flying from Mumbai to the United States via Karachi, Pakistan. The sole target of the hijackers was to find and kill the Americans, who insisted Bhanot to collect the passports from the passengers, so they can differentiate Americans from the rest of the passengers. Bhanot managed to hide 41 American passports who were on board.
After 17 hours, the hijackers started firing and Bhanot opened one of the exit doors and evacuated all the passengers and fellow crew members. She was shot while protecting 3 children from the gunshots.
She was called "the heroine of the hijack" and the youngest to be honored with the India’s prestigious award Ashok Chakra.
A Bollywood biopic “Neerja” was made in 2016, directed by Ram Madhvani, with leading bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor playing the lead role.
