Debate en la porteria del Real Madrid

in neoxian •  5 years ago

It's the story that simply won't go away, despite Zinedine Zidane's affirmation at the end of the 2018/19 season that Real Madrid would have a clear first choice goalkeeper this term.
Keylor Navas has reopened the dreaded debate with his performance against Tottenham Hotspur.
Thibaut Courtois' injury couldn't have come at a worse time for the Belgian stopper, especially after he shipped seven goals in the humiliating defeat to Atletico Madrid in New Jersey.
His absence wasn't felt at all in the 1-0 defeat to Spurs on Tuesday, with Keylor making a number of saves which prevented the result being more embarrassing for the Spanish giants.
Keylor has never wanted to surrender his place without a fight, that's been clear since the day Courtois arrived, however it can't possibly be good for the club to have a situation reminiscent of the start of the 2018/19 season when Julen Lopetegui genuinely didn't know who his No.1 was.
"We deserved a big victory, but Keylor was the best player in this game," Mauricio Pochettino explained in his post-match press conference.
"There are very few with his mentality in this sport. He showed that he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world."
It was only Harry Kane's clever chipped finish which beat Keylor on Tuesday, and his performance was so much better than Courtois' in New Jersey that Zidane may have some thinking to do.
This is just yet another unwanted problem for the French coach, with Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez still not yet having defined their immediate futures. However, Zidanewasn't willing to give too much away with regards to the goalkeeping situation.
"Everything is clear, everything has been made clear to every player," Zidane admitted.
"Keylor played a great game, I don't think there's a player here who owns a position.
