The Great night of Shiva

Maha Shivaratri is a festival known to honor the god Shiva. It is celebrated annually at late winter before the spring starts . It is a major festival of Hindu religion which signifies overcoming darkness and ignorance. It is believed that on this day, the stars in the Northern Hemisphere are at most optimum positions to help raise a person’s spiritual energy.It is also believed that the Shiva principle is most active on this day of the year. The devotees and followers celebrate this day by chanting and prayers and vising the sacred temples and old temples such as Pashupatinath in Nepal. Hundreds and thousands of people visit this place during this day and is one of the most crowded day on this place.
Devotees chant “Om Namah Shivay” and “Mahamritunjaya” all night praying for light over darkness. Tourists are seen enjoying the ambiance with curiosity, as colorful and naked sadhus are seen meditating, posing for photographs and interacting with disciples.

On this day the ban on smoking Marijuana is temporarily lifted. The only explanation for this is that the ascetics are imitating Shiva.
Hundred of naked ascetics at the ancient Shivaratri festival are seen at Pashupatinath, which brings an estimated one million devout Hindus flocking to Kathmandu’s Pashupatinath temple each year for rituals to cleanse them of sin and earn a place in heaven.

They smoke cone-shaped pipes of cannabis as part of the annual festival dedicated to Shiva, the god of destruction.
It is believed that after Shiva’s consort died, legend has it, he came to the forests near the temple, his body smeared with ash. Smoking cannabis, which grows wild in the forests of Nepal, he wore a serpent and draped his waist with a tiger skin as he wandered.
