Ronny Chieng: Asian Comedian Destroys America

This new stand-up comedy special comes from a senior correspondent on the Daily Show and star of a sitcom called International Student which was, as far as I know, reasonably successful.

I have to admit, that I didn't have a terribly high opinion of Ronny Chieng coming into this special but his act starts out extremely strong and I was laughing a lot in the first 15 minutes. Then, I don't know how to describe it but it kind of fizzled from that point forward.

I think the major reason why the act kind of faded after the start has a lot to do with the fact that his bits in the beginning were not connected to a larger overall story that the 2nd part of the special focuses on. Basically, i feel that after the first 15 minutes he goes into bits that have pretty massive lead-ins and when the punchlines are just kind of average it seems like it took a bit too long to get there.

At the start he focuses on his early experiences living in the United States with an outside Chinese perspective on the opulence and perhaps over-abundance of "stuff" that exists there. That portion of the show was some of the best stand-up comedy not done by Dave Chappelle that I have seen in quite some time.

Even though i don't recall laughing at all during the last 20 minutes or so, the show is still worth watching in an overall sense and I recommend it. If you find yourself getting bored after the very strong lead-in, you can turn it off but his bits on Amazon and napkin-distribution was just amazing.

Go see it! It's less than an hour after all. Now, what to watch next?
